The first two books are good (I think they're the only ones co-authored by the two OG creators of the show). And the Better Than Life "games" feature, but the concept is fleshed out and darker. The game functions like a drug and people get addicted to it, and their real life bodies just waste away.

King B, regarding you being a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis. Have you ever seen 'My Left Foot' (1989) ? DDL won best actor Oscar for it. Synopsis; No one expects much from Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis), a boy with cerebral palsy born into a working-class Irish family. Though Christy is a spastic quadriplegic and essentially paralyzed, a miraculous event occurs when, at the age of 5, he demonstrates control of his left foot by using chalk to scrawl a word on the floor. With the help of his steely mother (Brenda Fricker) -- and no shortage of grit and determination -- Christy overcomes his infirmity to become a painter, poet and author.

There are books available that retell red dwarf to make certain parts make a little more sense. The better than life storyline was absolutely epic. Lister imagines himself living with Kochanski basically in It's a Wonderful Life. And the game is outlawed because it's so deadly. I recently listened to the audiobooks on audible narrated by Chris Barrie and they're epic.

Going off the ship and improvements to the sets etc. are likely because it was (unexpectedly) popular and they gave it a larger budget.
