I was Barry 'The Bomber' Bloom and he was Sammy 'Slugger' Henderson. Our rivalry was one of the great legends of boxing, and the highlight of my often tumultuous life. But when Sammy retired with a 5-5 record against me, I was lost. Everyone wanted the feud settled once and for all, and without my great rival, I started to spiral.
Drugs and alcohol became fixtures of my life. I got myself into real trouble. I wanted to fight but I became uninsurable, too toxic for promoters. Finally, I appealed to Sammy for one last match. I needed the purpose in my life, needed the hype so that the bookers couldn't turn me down.
He agreed, but under one weird condition. The loser would become the winner's ring girl for their comeback tour. Between him putting up the money for the fight and convincing the league to let me participate, I had no choice. It was all on his terms. So I trained, I got clean, and I fought harder than I ever have in my life.
He knocked me out in the fifth round.
Now, I have his firm hand to make sure I never backslide into my bad habits. He takes good care of me, making sure I'm sober, happy and looked after. Considering I can never box again after all these treatments, that's probably for the best.
Tonight is the last fight of his victory lap, although it's far too late for me to go back. I just hope he doesn't get hurt. I want my Daddy healthy so that he can give me a pounding tonight, one that doesn't involve gloves.
