The doctors knew that the psychological threat of being tickled could be as powerful as the tickle itself, sometimes more so. The method was used primarily with new patients who had been found to have excruciatingly ticklish feet. The men were made completely immobile in the most constrictive bondage possible with their bare feet exposed. They were often left alone in a room for 15-30 minutes before a doctor would appear with a single feather in hand. Depending on the physician's style, he might choose to slowly describe to the patient what he intended to do with that feather, or he might dive right into taunting "tickle talk" to coax nervous giggles out of his immobilized victim.
