Going to the Opera can be expensive. Look for something that is performed in the original language. The music is written with that language in mind. Can't speak for a college setting, but a professional theater, depending on the size, is more likely to have captions above or below the stage so you can see what they're singing about. I usually recommend that people start with a comic opera. They're usually shorter, it's often easier to follow what's happening, and they're fun.
