The Untamed 陈情令 - Episode 23 | REACTION

I realized that I made a mistake in my comment at the end. It wasn't what I was trying to say. What I want to convey is that Jiang Cheng, being the biological son of Jiang Fengmian, bore the brunt of greater pressure and expectations compared to Wei Wuxian. Uncle Jiang's behavior towards his sons reflects his deep-seated flaws as a father. While he undoubtedly loved both boys, his actions often conveyed a different message.

His favoritism towards Wei Ying is palpable. He never actually acknowledged Jiang Cheng, always directing his attention and words to Wei Ying while Jiang Cheng waited in vain for a kind word or recognition. This neglect mirrored Madam Yu’s behavior, who was openly harsh and critical. While Madam Yu's cruelty was overt, Uncle Jiang’s neglect was a more insidious form of emotional abandonment. By giving Jiang Cheng the silent treatment, he reinforced a sense of inadequacy and invisibility in his son.

Madam Yu exacerbated the situation further. The immense pressure she placed on Jiang Cheng to live up to the family name, coupled with her constant criticism, eroded Jiang Cheng’s self-confidence and strained his relationship with Wei Ying. Initially, Jiang Cheng managed to cope with this pressure, but over time, it caused him to overthink and internalize his frustrations. The lack of open communication and emotional support built up inside him, eventually leading to the the breaking point that will come soon.

Uncle Jiang's inability to balance his duties as a clan leader with his responsibilities as a father contributed significantly to the familial tension. His failure to provide emotional support to Jiang Cheng and to shield Wei Ying from Madam Yu’s hostility reflects his shortcomings as a parent. Instead of nurturing his sons' strengths and fostering a loving environment, his actions—or lack thereof—created a rift that deeply affected both boys. Saving a boy and adopting him doesn't make someone a good father.

Moreover, Uncle Jiang's failure to protect Wei Wuxian from his wife's mistreatment is another glaring flaw. Madam Yu's open hostility and harsh treatment of Wei Wuxian were well-known, yet Uncle Jiang did little to intervene. Wei Wuxian, despite being adopted into the Jiang family and treated as one of their own, often found himself at the receiving end of Madam Yu's ire, with little to no protection from Uncle Jiang. This negligence is deeply troubling and highlights Jiang Fengmian inability to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all his children.

Uncle Jiang's actions, or lack thereof, are disappointing. Fans of Mo Dao Zu Shi often blame Madam Yu for the familial strife, but I hold Uncle Jiang accountable as well. While Madam Yu's childish jealousy is indeed annoying and ridiculous, she wasn't the only one at fault.

Okay now I want to talk about Madame Yu. Madam Yu, with her sharp tongue and harsh demeanor, is one of the most infuriating characters in Mo Dao Zu Shi. Her treatment of Wei Wuxian and her own son, Jiang Cheng, is a source of constant frustration and anger. What makes her behavior so maddening is not just her overt cruelty but also the underlying reasons for her actions and the profound impact they have on the people around her.

From the outset, Madam Yu’s jealousy and insecurity are palpable. Her resentment towards Wei Wuxian stems from her perception of him as a threat to her son’s position and affection within the Jiang family. This irrational jealousy drives her to mistreat Wei Wuxian, subjecting him to harsh words and unwarranted blame. Her inability to see past her own insecurities to recognize Wei Wuxian’s loyalty and kindness is deeply frustrating. Despite Wei Wuxian’s unwavering devotion to the Jiang family, Madam Yu constantly belittles and demeans him, treating him as an outsider and an enemy rather than a cherished member of the family.

Even more infuriating is the way Madam Yu’s actions affect Jiang Cheng. Her constant criticism and unrealistic expectations place an immense burden on him. She expects him to live up to the lofty standards of the Jiang family name, often comparing him unfavorably to Wei Wuxian. This relentless pressure erodes Jiang Cheng’s self-esteem and fuels his feelings of inadequacy and resentment. Instead of nurturing her son’s strengths and supporting him unconditionally, Madam Yu’s harshness drives a wedge between him and Wei Wuxian, creating a toxic environment that stifles both boys.

Madam Yu's behavior is particularly galling because it stems from a place of insecurity and fear rather than genuine concern for her family. Her jealousy and bitterness cloud her judgment, leading her to lash out at those around her. This pettiness is especially evident in her interactions with Wei Wuxian, where she seems more intent on asserting her dominance and superiority than on fostering any sense of familial harmony.

What makes Madam Yu’s actions even more infuriating is the contrast between her and other parental figures in the series. While characters like Lan Xichen and even Wen Qing show compassion and understanding towards their loved ones, Madam Yu’s actions are driven by her own insecurities and need for control. Her inability to see beyond her own fears and jealousies to recognize the true value and loyalty of those around her is deeply frustrating and tragic.

In conclusion, Madam Yu's behavior is a constant source of anger and frustration. Her jealousy, insecurity, and harsh treatment of Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng create a toxic environment that affects everyone around her. While it’s easy to blame her for the familial strife, it’s also important to recognize the complexity of her character and the deep-seated insecurities that drive her actions. Nonetheless, her inability to overcome these flaws and her relentless harshness make her one of the most maddening characters in Mo Dao Zu Shi.
