GODZILLA- CH-15. War
Added 2024-11-04 02:38:14 +0000 UTCAlthough it isn't as clear as during the day, the view remains sharp enough.
This is the case for both races currently locked in fierce battle in this extraordinary world.
But compared to James' enhanced vision, their sight is much weaker.
Under James's gaze, a fierce confrontation is unfolding between the two tribes.
The three-hundred-meter-wide river is no natural barrier; it forms a "trench" that only causes minor trouble.
When hundreds of primitive dinosaurs, their bodies ignited with flames, plunged into the river, the entire waterway began to boil.
Billowing white steam rose into the night sky.
As the dinosaur men emerged from the river, flames still licking their bodies, and engaged the snake people, the entire riverbank on the opposite side burst into fire.
Explosions and roars echoed across the battlefield.
The dinosaur men's fire abilities tipped the battle instantly in their favor.
Buoyed by their advantage, the dinosaurs grew even bolder.
However, James, who was observing the fight, suddenly frowned.
He looked up at the darkened sky.
His pupils narrowed, flickering with fiery embers, and his vision pierced through the darkness to focus on something over ten kilometers away.
What was it?
A massive black cloud was drifting toward the battlefield between the two tribes.
No—upon closer inspection, it wasn't a cloud but a swarm of humanoid mosquitoes.
The sheer density of the swarm was unsettling, especially for anyone with trypophobia.
But the mosquitoes weren't the main issue. Above them, an enormous bird-like creature was flying.
When James fixed his gaze on this massive bird, its sharp eyes met his.
James was momentarily stunned, then muttered a curse.
"Well, damn... what a giant moth! And it's ridiculously weird-looking."
Indeed, it looked like a moth, though its bizarre appearance set it apart.
The moth's size wasn't the strangest part; it had the head of a vulture, bat-like claws extending from its wings, and beneath it, eight long, spindly legs covered in coarse black hair, making it unsettling to look at.
And what truly baffled James was why a creature like this would be traveling with a swarm of mosquito-like beings. Evolution, it seemed, had taken a bizarre turn with this one.
These thoughts flickered through James' mind as he watched.
The sight was off-putting, as the giant moth and its entourage hardly aligned with his sense of aesthetics.
A swarm of mosquitoes and a massive moth arriving together? James doubted they were just passing by.
After his brief eye contact with the moth, it hovered in mid-air, halting its advance. The swarm followed suit, hovering a few kilometers away in the night sky.
The number of these humanoid mosquitoes could easily be 50,000, perhaps even 100,000, flying so silently in the sky that it made James wary.
"What are they up to?"
"They're not reinforcements for the snake people, so... are they here to take advantage of the situation?"
A smirk crossed James' face.
"Looks like tonight's going to be interesting."
"I wonder if any other guests will show up?"
With heightened alertness, James began scanning the area meticulously.
Forest, river, and every detail within a few kilometers—all fell under his scrutiny.
Downstream, about seven or eight kilometers from the battlefield, he noticed the river's surface rippling unusually.
There, in the night, several shark-like creatures occasionally surfaced.
And on a massive tree nearby, James spotted a scout—a striped sea snake coiled around the branches, observing the battlefield from afar.
While the snake resembled the basilisk-like monsters of the snake people, it bore distinctive zebra-like stripes that set it apart.
Upon seeing this, James grasped the situation.
This night wouldn't end easily.
As one proverb says, "While the snipe and clam struggle, the fisherman profits." The extraordinary races of this world were more cunning than he initially thought.
Still, James was perplexed. What gave them the confidence?
Even if they sought to take advantage of the battle, shouldn't the two sides be evenly matched?
But with the snake people being utterly overwhelmed...
Without further speculation, James reached a conclusion.
"So, there's likely another giant beast backing the snake people, just as I suspected."
"Where's this beast hiding?"
With renewed interest, James scanned the battlefield, ready to act if a giant basilisk or something similar appeared.
He intended to minimize the losses among the dinosaur men and, if necessary, divert the battle far from them.
Standing about three kilometers from the battlefield, James positioned himself strategically to avoid disrupting the dinosaur men's movements and activities.
The ground shook as anticipated.
Just moments after the dinosaur men had driven back the snake people, a deep rumble emerged from the distant primeval forest.
Trees crashed down, and the entire earth quaked as a monstrous serpent burst from the ground, creating a shockwave that rippled across the forest.
The explosive entrance sent waves of air and dust, hurling several dinosaur men backward.
Fortunately, with bodies like iron, the dinosaur men simply shook themselves off and took off running.
Yes, the moment they saw the giant serpent, they bolted.
The scene left the snake people dumbstruck—and even James was momentarily bewildered.
Were these the same headstrong dinosaur men he knew? The hot-headed lava creatures the snake people feared?
For a brief moment, silence fell over the battlefield.
Then, a knowing smile crossed James' face.
It seemed the dinosaur men understood the situation better than he thought and included him in their plans.
James chuckled, realizing their tactic was quite clever. As long as the dinosaur men retreated a safe distance, he'd have the freedom to fight without holding back.
---
The giant snake was puzzled.
What kind of enemy could instill such fear in its people?
They kept gesturing at the ground above, trying to communicate their fear.
From their frantic motions, the giant snake deduced that the threat came from some unusual creatures nearby.
The giant snake was familiar with dinosaur men and primitive dinosaurs; they were part of its food source whenever it awoke.
But its people had never shown this level of terror.
Were they really expecting it to protect them?
Had the dinosaur-like creatures grown so powerful that its own kin couldn't resist?
Had its people lost the courage of their ancestors?
The giant snake sighed inwardly, feeling a twinge of disappointment.
These poor, foolish little beings.
Fine, it thought. It would take a look outside.
Having been dormant for so long, the giant snake decided to indulge its subjects, who had served it loyally for millennia.
If its people truly couldn't handle the threat, it would have to eliminate it—losing their food supply wouldn't do at all.
