2025-11-09 00:51:04 +0000 UTCThis is incorrect. They were never allies. The French brutally suppressed all opposition to their rule -imprisonment, torture and executions were common. The Vietnamese fighting against the Japanese had spent the preceding years fighting their colonial rule. France basically surrendered without a fight, but continued their brutal suppression to free up Japanese troops elsewhere.

2025-11-06 06:24:04 +0000 UTCWhen the German war hero who had the movie made about him, Frederick Zoller, mentioned that he was the "German Sergeant York" he was referring to an American World War I war hero, who captured 132 Germans on his own. It is a fascinating story. They made a stylized Gary Cooper movie about him. He grew up in the back woods of the Appalachian mountains, had a very troubled early adulthood with alcohol and fighting, but was the best shot in the entire region and regularly won shooting contests. He got drafted to fight in WWI, but was highly religious and claimed Conscientious Objector status (meaning he refused to kill on religious grounds) and was treated very poorly until an officer convinced him that it was his Christian duty to fight the Germans. He was probably the best marksman in the entire US Army. He used to pick off German soldiers the same way he shot Turkeys--by making a "gobble-gobble" sound and then headshotting them when they poked their heads above the trench. (Turkeys are North American birds, so the Germans had no idea what the sound was and poked their heads out. Ironically, this was the same noise that got actual turkeys to poke their heads out.) Another trick he learned from hunting turkeys that he applied to warfare, was to pick off the last guy in a line when they were marching/moving. If you shoot the turkey/guy in front, they all notice and freak out. But if you pick off the last turkey/guy, nobody notices, and he legit took out dozens of soldiers this way. Heavily leaning into what we all (he's Canadian) imagine a posh, British officer class accent sounds like (but probably doesn't in real life lol). Definitely NOT American! Lulz. So British you might get bad teeth just from watching it. So British (not American) that you might start drinking tea unintentionally, or use the metric system for anything less than a kilometer.

But hitler and cie didn't die like that. as far as we know hitler did suicide in his bunker when Berlin falls on the hand of russsian and allies. and some of his people was judged as war criminal in nuremberg's proces. Unfortunately, Tien is right. they're still people who love hitler and his phylosophy, we call them Neo-nazis. I saw a guy in the market store with hitler's face tatooed on his shoulder (and him talking high quality tatoo, like a painting). either, i'm glad i discoverd this movie with you. even if some scene made me sick. 2025-10-30 07:11:15 +0000 UTCThis is a great movie; the opening sequence alone is a masterpiece. As you ladies have already said, Hans Lander is an absolutely diabolical villain. The way he disarms his victims with his charm and then sets them up is truly diabolical. It's a character you love to hate. Many great actors appear in this movie, including the entire elite of the German acting scene. I don't know in what order Tien watched the movies. But the actor who plays the villain Hans Lander, Christopher Waltz, also played the hero Dr. King Schulz in Django Unchained. He ist such a great actor. By the way, the movie "Pride of the Nation" (Stolz der Nation ) which is featured in "Inglourious Basterds," actually exists. It was filmed as a short movie to accompany "Inglourious Basterds." That was an awesome reaction, Angels, as always.💜

Tarantino did an interview before where he talked about how he had trouble finding an actor who could play Hans Landa to his satisfaction and even considered not making the movie if he couldn't find someone he liked to play the part.

Quarantino for the win. 😁 Quite funny to hear Tien and Yuri go back and forth about "are they French, American, no they're German" then they finally figure out they were British. LOL. For historical knowledge purposes, the older man in the room at the piano in that scene was Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister during WW2. That actor was a good representation of him. Since you all like Tom Cruise, you should check out Valkyrie with him in it. It is another WW2 film about an assassination attempt on Shitler. Shitler survived over 40 assassination attempts on his life during the war years.
