PLEASE CONSIDER: Somewhere along the timeline, Dib figures out he has a crush on Zim, doesn't know how to deal with it in the slightest and tries to completely ignore it and play it off despite it being so blaring obvious, making him more avoidant and dismissive. What Zim doesn't know won't hurt him.
Meanwhile, Zim is incredibly suspicious of the Dib-stink showing obvious "love" symptoms and is incredibly conflicted and disturbed by the thought of the Dib swept away by someone else. A jealous Zim plots to eliminate the problem, if only he could figure out who that problem is.
