SALAD FINGERS 13
Added 2023-09-20 18:19:15 +0000 UTC
It's here. The latest instalment. It's a 10 minuter and a style that is somewhere between Salad Fingers 9 and 11. I didn't go full crazy like I did in #11. I didn't want to spend a whole year making it look almost realistic. I crossed the line out of curiosity. Now I just focus on making it look as good as it needs to to get my ideas across. But I didn't go full retro like the Market episode or #12. I have found a nice place I think.
Anyway I am tired. This destroyed me. So I can't think of much else to say. Thanks for the support and look out for the bonus features. The script for this changed a fair bit over its production. Lots was cut out. Also I made a load of original music for this one. I really found the vibe I was looking for.
Anyway enjoy and it will be on Youtube next week after a week on Newgrounds.
They are good people and care about their creators (unlike Youtube :( )
*EDIT* the video attachment doesn't seem to work so here is the link.
also I will provide a link to a video download as part of the extra bits.

I love it! It's so great to still be able to watch a new episode from time to time!

Hi David. Over the years of being a fan, I've come to recognise Salad Fingers as it's own style of media. In the same way that when the band Obituary releases a new album my first thought is "Does it sound like Obituary? Yes? Good, that's exactly what I wanted". Does this feel like a Salad Fingers episode? Yes it absolutely does. The only difference being that each instalment has it's own flavour whilst being undisputedly still Salad Fingers. It would be jarring to see each Salad Fingers episode progressively become more and more out there in terms of production quality and length, and I'd hate to think what kind of adverse effects it would have on you as a sole creator to have to "one up" yourself every time you make one, just to conform to a preconceived standard people seem to have where things always have to be more crazy and polished with each release. Because that is when it becomes a product rather than art, and you are one of the greatest artists of our age. Thank you again. - Robert D. Johnstone

Hope you don't mind the long reply and thanks for answering. I can relate to the music thing, but that doesn't bother me since that's all I've got. My first album was kind of rushed so I've gone for a higher production on this one, but I feel like I'm chasing something imaginary now. When I go back to your videos from 17 years ago they already seem timeless. I hope you don't mind me saying all this, I don't think there is a single video you've made that I haven't admired. I feel like my take away is to never be afraid to make smaller "cruddier" things, but be prepared for bigger projects every so often.
Oh and I'm always there for a Locust Toybox release, I've met a few people in music communities online that are a fan of your music. It must get around, Just might not be represented by Bandcamp downloads or youtube views, unfortunately. But I have multiple times seen Locust Toybox being talked about by some folks, mainly in idm communities. It's so dreamy and somber. I've got Tardigrade in my lazy morning playlist and I'm always so pleased when it comes on.

I can't imagine anyone confusing your work with an attempt to simply garner attention via transgression. Taboos are inward-looking, they refer mostly to what IS done, what IS within the familiar boundary. Your work seems to live and breathe in a different space... unfamiliar but grounded in its own internally consistent reality - i.e not simply in reference to or in contrast with the familiar.

When you make something dark you don't really get put off by the darkness because you are in control of it. I don't ever feel I cross the line. Unless it seems to edgelordy. Then it's just kind of cringey.

I feel relief. I got very tired of animating but it turned out how I hoped it would and in some ways better, though I can't tell exactly because I have looked at it too much. There is always a feeling when making a new entry to a series that it might not be a very good episode. It happens almost every time. I have stopped trying to make each episode bigger and more polished than the previous because that is exhausting. Now my main focus is to make sure everyone sees it. With each passing year it seems content needs to be pushed harder and harder on social media otherwise it won't be seen. Releasing music is very different to me. Nobody seems to care when I do that so there is no pressure so I don't worry about it.

Mr Firth! Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to your art, you're one of my biggest inspirations and I adore everything you create, truly. Bit of a loaded question, but how do you feel after releasing a project like this? Releasing music takes a lot out of me, I worry a lot about prioritising time.

Thank you for making what you make. It may sound ridiculous, but I am glad to see you continuously adding variety to what you make. You might make something realistic here, and something cartoony there, but nevertheless, it always comes through as your personal art style! It's always unique and it is the reason you're my only patreon subscription!
Please, David, never stop doing what you're doing. There will always be fans for what you make. I've been around since some of your first animations and we will always be happy just to see you make something new. Please keep making things you want to make! Thank you for your time!

Some of the previous episodes were getting kinda dark... honestly I'm glad this one provided a bit of light relief.

If you hop onto the Discord the link there (in Announcements) that leads you to Newgrounds is active and does work.
