10/10 Reaction: They Ate 10/10 Season: They Cooked

Lone Wolf

I honestly don't remember.. I remember very little about what the season was about, expect for the specific area that made me start losing interest. if I had to guess, I would say maybe mid season?? But I have no clue when it happens

The Game Club

@G-Verse Could you give a hint like First or Second half of the season?

Lone Wolf

Thanks Jacob! I really honestly hope I enjoy it as well. Watching S1 has been such a treat!

The Game Club

So awesome that you enjoyed the reaction series nik! Thank you for checking it out with us! As for why specifically I fell off from Re:Zero... Well you'll just have to find out in Season 2!

The Game Club

Idk what your hang up is with season 2 Graham but I hope you still enjoy rewatching it. Season 1 has been fun seeing you guys watch and discuss it together.

Jacob

I don't think it was the animation. I think I have a fair assumption on what he didn't seem to like about Season 2's direction, and he's not alone in his criticisms. Alot of people when watching S2 while airing or even long afterwards seemed to have some problems with it and I can understand why. But yeea would be interesting to hear directly what such problems are when we get to it.

That's a very interesting paralel. Is it to depict Petelgeuse's warped thinking or something else...something hinting at Emilia's true nature? πŸ€”I'm really curious as to what info S2 reveals. - George

You know, it's actually really cool they tried to make as much of a self contained story as possible. It sucks ending on a cliffhanger that never gets resolved! And don't worry you can expect Frozen Bonds soon!

The Game Club

I loved the reaction to the entire season, Graham and George! Thank you so much for the reactions! It's been great! Although, Graham, I'm too curious on what you don't like about Season 2, the only thing I can think about is (no spoilers) is the animation. They made Season 2 during Covid and had huge production issues during it's airing time, so they had animation issues and tons of production issues, but the storytelling and storywriting and the plot was perfect imo. So, if you can't say in the comments or anything because of spoilers, feel free to send me a DM or something because I'm so curious and I'd like to know. I've been watching Re:Zero and reading the light novels for many years and even till this day, I can't find any faults in Re:Zero that actually make sense (other than animation in some very specific scenes).

I'm glad you both enjoyed the show as much as you did! I'm always happy when I see people enjoy Re:Zero. This is probably a good time to mention that when Season 1 was in development, it was unclear the show would ever get another season, so a lot of decision were made with that in mind. They tried their best to make it so that even if Re:Zero never got another season, it could still stand on its own as a good show, and if you ignore the Rem cliffhanger which only get added later once Season 2 was confirmed, I think they accomplished their goal. This however does mean that they cut a lot of details that added some more world building or showed more hints about the story, but would never get resolved within the first season, were cut from the source material in order to create this more self-enclosed story. Of course, there will always be cut content when adapting a light novel to an anime as sometimes there just isn't enough space and some things don't translate over well. If it any point you feel like wanting to understand more of Re:zero's story or the world, the light novel/web novel are excellent for that! I don't know if I would have been as big of a Re:Zero fan as I am now if I hadn't read ahead in the web novel! Either way, I hope you enjoy Season 2! You might wanna watch the Frozen bond OVA beforehand but it's really up to you. Good luck!

Reading Petelgeuse's dialogue and behavior of obsession with the Witch is a massive parallel to Subaru's flawed and warped treatment of Emilia - doing so much for a person with the intent of receiving their love or affection, without even knowing or even caring to acknowledge the person's feelings.. and getting angry when your efforts aren't received in the way you want. Petelgeuse' words are even kinda similar to what Subaru said to Emilia in their 'breakup' moment. "Why won't you understand? I thought that if it was anyone, it would be you. I've made everything work out haven't I? I risked my life. All because you were important to me! Everything worked out because of me. All of it! All of it was because I was there! You owe me a debt you could never repay!" - Natsuki Subaru (Episode 13) "Why? After everything I did for you! Witch! Satella! Give me your love!" - Petelgeuse (Episode 25) Selfish, self serving and not truly seeing the person for who they are.. but what YOU want them to be for yourself. Difference being.. Subaru recognized he was being selfish, paid dearly for it and made up for his mistakes. Petelgeuse died before he could realize his mistake or even atone for his sin.

Re:Zero definitely has alot of cool themes and executes on them in very interesting ways. First off I'd say a MAJOR theme is Love. Its a consistent concept explored and paralleled in different ways through most of the main characters. Whether its Subaru's flawed perception of Love for Emilia being tied to his need for acceptance and validation as the isekai protagonist hero having proven himself as changed from the loser who did nothing with his life on earth and severly hates himself for it. There's also alot of mentions of "one sided" loves - from Rem viewing Subaru as her hero to Subaru's obsession with Emilia being a parallel to Petelgeuse's one sided love and devotion for the Witch of Envy. We also can't forget the mysterious "Love" from the Witch for Subaru, which again is another one sided love because Subaru literally has no idea who or what she is and what he did to have the Witch so fixated on him. Another theme is the False Expectations of Escapism being crushed by the brutal reality. Many times Subaru mentions genre tropes and cliches that he hopes would happen, only to have it all crushed. The isekai genre is the ultimate form of escapism from your problems, and it seems this show is dedicated to saying DON'T DO THAT. At a meta standpoint, this show seems to stand for self improvement and accepting your flawed sinful nature (hence the use of the seven deadly sins) in order to move forward. This show is very dedicated to showing that the world is unkind and unfair and to not expect that the cycle of change to be a better person is easy. But as long as you don't give up and find the strength to keep going.. the struggles can be worth it when the light finally shines for you. The author manages that perfect balance of hope and brutal despair without tipping over to one side too much.
