There's so much reason for why Subaru would obviously be in love with Emilia over Rem, but we haven't seen much of her this arc so people forget all about it in favor of the stuff that Rem has done for him. The reason people get upset about him still loving Emilia over Rem is that Subaru doesn't follow along with them on their recency bias. He has his own firmly cemented emotions and it's great that he doesn't just let himself get swayed as easily as viewers of the show seem to

I wrote it before hearing about any theories. I don't think what I said debunks any theories or could be interpreted as such. I just think NO reason to fall in love with Emilia is crazy when her actions alone can speak so much. But I understand what you mean.

Coming to this new world alone with no connections, seemingly powerless, no home, no money, no job, no living skills, no understanding of the language, how cultures and rules work other than generic understanding from fictional fantasy stories.. Subaru was completely alone. After a terrible first day, getting mugged in a back alley on the brink of almost getting killed he meets Emilia and she saved him. The first act of selfless kindness in this completely foreign world where he has been treated like shit, goes a long way. Then again when Subaru is almost killed saving everyone at the loot house, Emilia takes it upon herself to bring him home and take care of him. She could've just as easily handed Subaru off to Reinhard and be done with him, but she wanted to look after him and get him better. Well.. and to get to the bottom of why he knows her when she's never met him before too lol. Then she helps give him a place of belonging at the Roswaal mansion. In the mansion arc, remember that EVERYONE was suspicious of him from the get-go and not so quick to trust Subaru? Emilia was the only one who trusted Subaru and was so kind to him at every turn CONSISTENTLY in every loop. During the whole mansion arc where you're dying repeatedly from a curse and then later find out being brutally killed from Rem, the progress you make with Rem and Ram and the others are always reverted to zero every time you die.. I can imagine knowing that Emilia trusts you and willing to hear you out is emotionally calming. Knowing that there's at least ONE person who's there for you. Not to mention the lap pillow she provided for him when he was at his wits end. As he's putting on the act trying his hardest to build trust and strong bonds with everyone, she was the one who took the inititive to help calm him down and give him space to vent his suffering and pains. That's another strong reason to fall in love. Come on, I love Rem.. but there is PLENTY reason why Subaru has fallen so hard for Emilia. It may have started out as his otaku wish fulfillment "she must be my waifu and heroine I am tasked to protect," and just general physical attraction, but he has built so much understanding of her selfless natured character based off what she has done for him when she never needed to. Its the effects of being the FIRST person who consistently treated Subaru as a good person. Rem of course changed and came to trust Subaru afterwards.. but its psychologically understandable that even after everything Rem does for him now, he can never forget his love for Emilia.
