I respect Subaru for coming out and saying that Emilia is his one true love. He didn’t lead her on while also saying that he still needs her by his side.

I agree, but I think that's what makes Subaru so inspiring. It just wouldn't hit as different, if Subaru wasn't dragged across the ground from the brutal reality.
When you accept the brutal reality.. it can only go up from there. Hopeful to succeed and be better, but not blinded by unrealistic expectations that you won't fail over and over.

"From the very beginning Subaru has been clinging to the wish fulfillment isekai promise of escaping to another world, getting magic powers, saving the beautiful main heroine and becoming someone special - a hero. But the brutal reality has set in and completely crushed his spirit. After being spit in the face with failure after failure.. he has finally come to realize nothing has really changed from before he came here. He isn't anything special and was a fool to expect anything from such shallow self satisfying delusions."
It really hits different seeing it written down so plainly...from such high hopes to such a brutal reality. It's a marvel Subaru can keep going.

The author sure knows how to make wins feel cathartic.. by dousing us in long stretches of painful suffering and despair.
While I agree with Graham on the point, I also think the point of starting again "From Zero" is for Subaru to confront what he's been running away from the whole time. Not just in this arc, but from ever since he came to this world. Life isn't so linear. There will always be setbacks and struggles, stagnations, progress and regression. Life is a cycle of falling over and restarting over again. Subaru really needed the encouragement from someone to stand back up again.

We don't know what kind of life Subaru had before.. but judging from his dialogue with Rem and in the very first episode before being transported, it seems to have been a life of regret from doing nothing but playing games in his room. His self loathing, his desperation to prove himself clearly didn't come from nowhere. But from deep rooted issues he still isn't addressing. That seems to be the root of his hero complex, his main character syndrome and insecurities of not being good enough.
Its heartbreaking to see the mask drop and the true Subaru come out. All the bravado and confidence Subaru had from the beginning of the show was always an act to hide his fears. Its sad to think this is what Subaru has thought about himself the entire time, from before he was transported to this world. Loser, worthless, incompetent, a disappointment. He hates himself more than any audience member ever could lol.
Unless Subaru took a look at himself and changed.. nothing was going to get better. I'm happy Subaru was finally ready to drop everything, admit he was wrong and spilled everything he felt to Rem. Now that has happened.. Subaru can finally start over From Zero and try better with a clear mind and support. Lessgo! Time for the W! We need it now.

"All you know is how you perceive yourself"
Absolutely savage counter. Also, Patrasche (the ground dragon) is the ACTUAL best girl of the show and I'll die on that hill

yeah i agree with George on how isolated Subaru is, i think its easy to overlook, but even if he was able to tell people, I think it would still be isolating to have experiences that no one but you will ever feel

Ep 18 is what ignited the most vicious Waifu War of the 2010s in the entire anime community. Rem vs Emilia. I was on team Rem all the way.
