The thing about the Soul Gems (and Grief Seeds), the English words are used for them, not Japanese words. The characters probably do not know what those words mean. To them, it's just what it's called. I've noticed that English speaking reactors tend to not catch that those are even in English. As for Mami, her head got chomped and her SG was on her head. So definitely dead.
