What a cool project, and you particularly did a great job. For most old hand tools, where there are an abundance of examples, a refurbishment as generally ScoutCrafter would do is fine - and for practicality most appropriate. What you do a fine job of here is showing wat a restoration really is. Only remove what is damaged or could cause damage, then use the most authentic materials and approaches possible to bring the original tool back to function while preserving its unique character. How you handled gaskets, brass fittings, and recreating Japanning are all exemplary.

I love the design of the internal "piston." Must have just eaten oil, though.
