Penny Street Public Lavatories Battle Map - Launch

Hello Adventurers! Our final map of the month is here! This is a fun and quirky location that I hope will be a blast to run while in any large town or city. I’ve called it Penny Street Public Lavatories (Rest Rooms for you lovely Americans). Now I don’t expect these to be widely available in any fantasy setting, but I can imagine some super genius gnomic artificer coming up with something like this as a new business concept. ‘Paying to poop may be a radical concept but it’s the way of the future!’ Everyone else thinks they are just daft of course. I can imagine so many fun encounters for this location, personally, I’d use Jellies or Gelatinous cubes.

I’m still coming up with next month’s map ideas, I have some rough ideas, which I’ll flesh out and let you know when I have a concrete plan! Encounter Descriptions

Your eccentric Gnomic employer was quite animated when explaining his new and ‘revolutionary’ business concept. ‘Public Conveniences will be all the rage’ he insisted with a slightly fevered look in his eye. The man was obviously sleep-deprived, and who could blame him, his business was on the verge of bankruptcy. Rumors of people going missing in his public toilets had crippled his business and while he was willing to dismiss the talk as simply ‘backward folk unable to conceive of such a high-minded concept’, a new development had forced his hand. The custodian of the lavatories has gone missing and with your growing reputation, you seemed like a good choice to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The exterior of the Lavatories is little more than a small roof and two sets of wide stairs leading down, below street level, into an underground foyer. A sign on either side of the entrance reads ‘Penny Street Public Conveniences’ and below it, a small handwritten note elaborates ‘A place to relieve yourself that is not on the street or out of a window.’

The foyer is lit by a cold glow emanating from glass lamps on the walls. A small wooden booth displays soaps, washcloths, and perfumes. A gate blocks the entrance into the lavatory proper, a coin slot at its side proclaims ‘1 copper entrance fee’.

The lavatories consist of two main rooms, to the right is a large room full of washbasins and urinals. To the left is another equally large room full of wooden cubicles. In each room are a number of colorful pictograms illustrating how to use each ‘convenience’. At the back of each room is a wooden door, one has a small brass sign attached which reads ‘Custodian, knock for assistance’.

Encounter notes

This map has two levels, depending on the encounter you could have a battle at the entrance at street level and then another one below in the lavatories proper.
The cubicles have a gap under and above the door so light can get in. The Custodians room and the Supply room have doors with locks. The cubicles have a simple bolt lock.
The strange blue lighting could be magical or created by glowing insects trapped in the glass lamps. Maybe these insects are actually quite dangerous when they swarm, a few have escaped and a hive is now living in the walls or under the floor.
This could be a great place for a street gang’s base of operations, you have been hired to clear them out. I imagine the ‘bathrooms’ could be used for the gang leader.
Hint at there being a gelatinous cube or jelly in the lavatories, extremely clean floors for example. Have the Custodian resign because of it. Custodian resignation letter: “Dear Mr.Flibertyflaggon, This is my letter of resignation. I do not appreciate you cleaning the lavatories at night while I sleep. It’s both creepy and an insult to my profession. The Custodians guild will be informed of your actions. Yours with regret, John Longmeister.
A Gelatinous Cube has invaded the lavatories (or you could go with Jellies or Oozes). It has been eating patrons while they sit on the toilet. The Custodian could have been its last victim. Have one stall/cubical be ‘full of cube’, when the door is opened it reveals a skeleton floating in the air above the toilet bowl. Roll a secret perception check to see if the party realizes it’s a body stuck inside the cube (cubes are almost completely transparent).
There is a route down to the sewers at the back of the supply closet. This could be used by the thieves guild or as a way for the party to reach the sewers without the standard manhole cover.
Rats, alligators, or anything else you can imagine living in the sewers could decide a nice lavatory is a better home.
