Although most information on the ground is purely rumor, hear-say or pseudo-mythology so it’s always hard to pin down the origin or veracity of information like this when a character mentions it so casually. I don’t think many people have personally been witness to someone trying to make the trip up, but a sort of legend seems to have been built around it based on the spread of stories of a handful who have tried.

I remember the mangaka was in the US during the last Anime NYC, and the singer of the OP (who’s American) showed her the graffiti around the city so they took notes and whatnot.
