The conflict between "humans" and the pigs is a mirror of how the Jews were treated by the Nazi's during WWII. I'm not sure if the author meant this, but it's pretty close. The Jews were sub-human according to the Nazi regime. but instead of internment camps the pigs fight the war here.

Malachi Hough

Lets gooooooooooo! Cant we get 2 episodes per day instead of per week?!?!? hahahaha

Rassaa

so glad u finally decided to watch 86. its been a while since i watched it and read the novels. The Pararaid device was forced on them when they became 86. its a brain sensory sharing device. Republic uses it because the Legion jams all wireless communication using "Eintagsfliege" the butterfly like legion. The handlers can connect to them all or to individual members automatically. not sure if its voluntary between 86 or not. ....... interesting story as to how that teck came to be ;)... and just a heads up, this story turns really dark as things go on.. quite a few messed up things happen. As much as Lena tries to be good she herself initially treated the 86 differently like not bothering to know their names. it wasn't intentional. Its just that that's what she is used to.. so from her point of view she is treating them really good by not calling them 86 or pigs or scum.. but in reality its quite dehumanizing when your name gets taken away and replaces with a title. That's why Theo crashed out. She apologizes and makes up for her mistake in the end but it just goes to show the different sides in which characters see things. And you said it really well when comparing it to online activism. screaming out loud about all the bad but not really doing anything about it. What difference does it really make in the end? As for the bodies... you'll find out soon enough.

Watching you react to 86 has lite a fire under me to get the light novels. I want to thank you.... You turned me into a collector and I'm slowly building my bookcase of anime.

James Du Tiger

You see a level of detachment from Shin from the rest of spearhead. He alone bears the burden of leadership and carrying the memory of the dead. You saw how the girls think of him as stoic. He bears it so they don’t have to. They can be free to laugh and enjoy the little life they have knowing in the end that they too will be bore by their reaper to his final destination. He will carry them all.

Herminio Hernandez Jr

A lot of the great lite novel adaptations are so great because they have more detail when it comes to the overall and the psychology of characters as opposed to a lot of manga adaptations

DocGreen

3rd watchthrough of this and I just realized the change in the OP lol that is crazy to do.

Shucks

Sheesh that makes that scene alot deeper

Scruffy246

If you don't know that game is Old Maid then you haven't seen enough Anime

dairyhouse

Let’s goooooooooooo

Jordan

Episode 3 was the one that showed me this was not a binge anime for me

Andrew S

Yes, the title screen and ED are used to separate the perspectives. Always watch after.

I absolutely love your breakdowns and reactions. Coming from YouTube, Patreon is so so worth the sub and non-edited content. And you're quickly learning why so many of us hold this show in high regards..it's such a beautiful blend of action, emotion, passion, and context/ideas that make you think. If this 90 minutes, just you wait! I am so here for this I'm excited to take this ride with you. I'm giddy watching your reaction and putting the pieces together, I know you have a schedule and it's selfish, but man I wish you would just bing this show! 😁

Wheaty

Edit: This point does comes from a youtube comment, but I also did my own research on it. Welcome friendly discussion☺️ Just wanted to add a detail that gets lost in translation. This comes from a YouTube comment I saw. By the end of episode 3, when Laughing Fox (Theo) completely snapped, there's a legitimate reason for his reaction. When Lena talks about Kaie's death, she said "Kirschblute no koto wa, 'zannen' deshita." The word "zannen" (残念) in Japanese roughly translates to "that's unfortunate/too bad/oh that's disappointing." It's a casual word often used for minor inconveniences in daily life, like "Oh, it's raining today so we can't go out, zannen" or "The test results didn't go well, zannen." This word is completely inappropriate when talking about someone's death. Lena also used the same word in Episode 1 when her previous squadron leader died. This reveals that Lena subconsciously doesn't see the 86 as truly human, despite what she wants to believe in her idealistic mind. That's exactly why Theo snapped and said it's something she'll forget about over dinner, calling her out for being a hypocrite who only pretends to care about them.

Lawrence

Well, little by little, more and more layers are becoming apparent. It's completely true that it's a fairly underrated show, perhaps because of the uncomfortable topics it deals with.

Pedro Hernández

I'm so excited you're finally getting to this show, you have no idea! It's actaully what made me subscribe to your Patreon, haha. I love watching your reactions on youtube and the way you really pay attention and empathize with characters so when you announced you would be doing 86 at some point I couldn't wait! This series is really good about doing "show not tell", there's so much significance in almost every scene, down to the last detail. It's not an easy show to rewatch but every time I do I spot new things I missed before. No dialog is wasted, and the emotions and conversations feel so real. Even the detail of Kaie playing cards while talking to Lena showed her personality and added characterization while in most other anime that would have been a still shot of her with just her mouth moving. The pacing of this show is also really great, the plot continues to move forward without being rushed and it gives time for the viewer to really absorb what's happening. Thank you for your reaction, really looking forward to next Friday!

JennyLH

They say it gets better from here. I keep meaning to read the novels but I wanted to start from the beginning so I've only gotten one down. Which is, you know, the first of the anime. From what I hear the anime covers the first three. I need to go from the start or I'll feel like I missed something, but it's hard when I know probably 90%+ of what's going to happen.

Mike E

What Jerome says to Lena is always a very telling portion of what occurs in the real world. People want others to do the idealisms that they themselves could not see through. It's one of the reasons why heroes are considered such revered figures because they themselves have let their ideals become a reality, and let their actions dictate the world they live in. However, this also makes people complacent or even very easy to manipulate or make into characters unwilling to try to fulfill such promises to themselves. It's one of the reasons why authoritarians gain traction in the world because they usually have proven that they can make their will into a reality either by actual work and cleverness or at some moments just sheer dumb luck and considerable things falling into the right place. And then you get the two sides of either the supporters or the opposition. The supporters generally don't believe that they will ever be affected, and some of them won't, but many of them will, Kind of like how much of the adult Alba know exactly what is going on but choose to not heed it, and their complacency of the situation is why it keeps continuing. They live in a safe bubble where the malcontents are either outside or have been driven outside, and the promise of a future where the Legion shut down and none of who they consider human are not dying is keeping their illusion alive, but this can all change in a moments notice. Then you have the opposition, like the 86, where they were at one time people that lived in this society, and probably did not think this could have happened to them, but when a threat is calling from the outside, they are the marginalized communities that are used to deal with the lack of accountability by the group that is current in power. It reminds me quite a bit of the rise of Germany prior to ww2 where they were impacted by the Treaty of Versailles very terribly and the era of the Great Depression hammered the entire globe and the Germans suffered worse for it, and felt they were being treated Harshly for ww1 even though they didn't actually start it. These two things could be akin to how the Alba saw the Legion. So when the Legion attacked the Republic, an external threat such as the economic situation that hurt the Germans, the Alba started using others to facilitate a solution by throwing human bodies at the problem and labeling them as non-human to keep said solution. And kind of like Germany where their rampant military build up saw a rise in economic factors, less people to take wealth and jobs from the Germans around them, they saw this as a success and kept thinking this is the right answer. And for the Alba, it was keeping their status quo of every day life secure while others were doing the fighting for them. It's always really interesting historically speaking how consistent this historically becomes over and over. Honestly, it is really part of human nature because we see this time and time again. For Lena, it is usually effectively impossible to do big changes or revolutions on your own, but little changes of accountability of ones self, and doing things that matter to you can take one a long way. This is why even though she is facing a mountain of impossibility, it should still be a good sign that if one person can change their outlook and take accountability of things in their own hands, then more people can do so as well. It only takes one spark to light up a change. Even facing society and the ingrained ideology, her willingness to change and adapt even when all sides are figuratively against her is something people should strive to be. So, instead of following heroes or authoritarians, one can be the change everyone is waiting for.

jastop94

It’s goated for sure 🔥

Kruxx

Yeah definitely, the second watch hits harder when you know and understand everything more

Kruxx

I love this show so much, in my top 10. I listen to the OST like all the time, this show lives rent-free in my head lol.

Itz A Dolphin

There is so much symbolism and foreshadowing, like with angels, and reapers in this anime. Peak directing that is hard to some by. The storytelling is phenomenal.

Itz A Dolphin

When you talked about names last week I was thinking ah, that plot point.

Itz A Dolphin

True, might be interesting to see how long it takes from the beginning of the season till the end to have an idea of how long it takes in world. So maybe just have a reference from the first date and compare it to the last date for funzies haha

Kruxx

This is a list of the names I found (for reference) if you want, but obviously - like most shows - a lot of them we won't really interact with haha. Real Name Codename Shinei Nouzen Undertaker Raiden Shuga Wehrwolf Theoto Rikka Laughing Fox Anju Emma Snow Witch Kurena Kukumila Gunslinger Kaie Taniya Kirschblüte Daiya Irma Black Dog Haruto Keats Falke Louie Kino Fafnir Touma Sauvy Helianthus Matthew Nanaki Walpurgis Chise Authen Griffin Kuroto Hinie Manticore Mina Shiroka Artemis Hariz Senya Cato’Nine Myna Yatomika March Hare Kujo Nico Sirius Mikuri Cairo Leukosia Tohzan Sasha Gunmetalstorm Kariya Rohga La Bete Shuri Gilith Dendroaspis Lecca Lin Burnt Tayl Ochi Anton Gladiator Io Dodanthe Argos Lev Aldrecht (Maintenance) Fido (Drone) Cat w/100 names (Cat)

Kruxx

They say it's coming, but......I'm on the fence about this, i don't want a season 2. I'm afraid of what will happen....

James Du Tiger

What's great about this story is that, unlike a lot of western media where it feels more "patronizing" or spelling out a lesson, it trusts viewer's intelligence to know what is wrong from right. Asato Asato (the creatory of 86) tackles these sensitive issues in a way that is more existential, and character driven. The Alba citizens bigotry is built into their system, so normalized that they deny the existence of the 86ers entirely. Lena's character development doesn't come from someone lecturing her, but from her own confrontation with her complicity. The show rarely stops to explain moral lessons, and it lets the cruelty speak for itself. Even though it does seem like a major component - the bigotry - and all, it really does seem like it's more of tool to that allows the characters to shine. Showing that they have a lot of depth and even they, the ones who are directly affected by it are able to take everyone's context into consideration by not just deeming a certain group of people as bad or another as good because ultimately that would be exactly what the Alba are doing. This story is fundamentally a character driven story and the battles that they themselves go through internally and how they deal with, cope, and understand the situations they are forced into. Also, the cinematography/directing is really amazing it's one of the first anime that really made me pay attention to how beautiful it is to compose a story in different and unique ways. Best CGI in a show imo.... hahaha Great job following everything, hahah I don't know why I'm surprised you catch on to a lot of things as well as you do through your first watch. I mean I guess that's why we are subscribed and follow you because your reactions really have a lot of care involved in them - just like your Naruto reactions. Keep up the good work Flexie! :) (Also really glad you're following the watch order its really the most optimal way to watch it if youre not binging it despite what people have said)

Kruxx

Thanks for the info. I knew something was up about the picture, but didn't know that.

James Du Tiger

What you said about her fathers name, that is interesting... I never knew that... Thanks for the info.

James Du Tiger

The part when she’s saluting flowers. She puts them there when a 86 dies under her command it’s her own personal memorial. At the beginning with the flower bouquet was when a bunch of them died from her last unit she was in charge of

The KnightGundam

I get more teary eyed the second watch through than I did the first.

PurpleJester

Its really nice the amount of attention you pay each episode, like with the dates and stuff. It's not like you can't watch the series without it but being aware of all those details makes the experience a lot more fun and rewarding when you put the pieces together.

Ecodude

First of all, thank you. I'm a new member of your Patreon, and I'm happy to be here, especially happy to see you enjoying this show in particular. I can't explain what it means to me to see you diving into this anime. These reaction videos... I don’t think I’ve been waiting for something like this in a long time. I'm in love with this anime, and I don’t know, seeing someone think deeply about it is really heartwarming. You take time not just to watch, but to think about what it means. Watching this show over and over made me notice some flaws, but still, I can’t think of a show that’s more important to me personally. Every time a particular piece of music plays, or when I rewatch a part of an episode, I still get goosebumps. I have the feeling you’ll love Eighty Six more and more each week, but I’m definitely biased, I think you’ve noticed that XD. Have a great day, and thank you again for bringing a bit of joy into my life with those videos. I really enjoy rewatching shows through your reactions, it feels like I’m watching with someone who loves anime the way I do, and that’s something new for me.

Argails

I'll just add, I've watched this a bunch of times and never paid any attention to the dates. It's there if you need it but you can probably make due without them.

oVErlORbVR

The flags are a bit different in this show, it's not so much in the dialogue but by the more subtle details. Kaie being left with the Joker, with the Grim Reaper on it for example. After Kaie's death Theo is spacing out while everyone is playing basketball, and is directly in front of the sword bearing mural, the blade right above his head. It's a reference to the Sword of Damocles, and the imminent danger that they're constantly in. At 1:16:10, on the memorial, you can see her father's name as the last Alba to be killed in combat against the Legion.

Jake Thompson

"Eighty-Six" is a slur. Which is why what Theo said was very necessary. Though he didn't blame her personally, she does share some form of blame, because she is part of society. And it's not her ancestors. She is currently living in that system and as Kaie said, she is very idealistic, but she doesn't understand. Not really. Like a noble who gets that there are poor people, who starts charities to try to help, but never was in the part of town that is so poor that people live in squalor and don't have money for food. Understanding something intellectually isn't the same as really understanding it on a deep level. And Lena thought she understood it at deeper level. And of course she asked for cats name. She didn't ask their names. So it sounds harsh, but it is a reality check that Lena needs. As for the rest of your questions - you will get answers in the future for most of them.

Jan Negrey

This 21-23 are a movie and should be experienced together, 22 is my favorite episode of any media not just anime

SecondCityKyle

100% should also watch the last 3 episodes together.

Renaud Nadeau

I believe it’s said that the laws to put them into camps was put into motion 9 years ago from that point, I think Kaie(?) was the one who mentioned it during their conversation

DFrench125

If you really care, there will be names that are pronounced weird simply due to them being non-native for the Japanese VAs. Example, Annette's name is French in origin so while A-net-o is how its said in the Anime, the name would traditionally sound just like "ah-net" to a native speaker of the language.

Bigmeadow

You almost had it. Instead of being removed from the OP when they die, they're added to it. At the part with the flower field.

Mune Yotsuki

For the OP Characters disappear from the group pic and reappear in the field of flowers after they die…so yeah you mostly got it

SecondCityKyle

Super important detail

SecondCityKyle

Fun tid bit she even asked the cats name before she asked their names

boostorange

It's here. Thank you so much for getting this up tonight. I appreciate all of your hard work despite the griping from some people.

Mune Yotsuki

Lena is one of the best female MCs in all of anime and she shares a VA with Pop Step which is such a different vibe, Ikumi Hasegawa, one of my favorites All the characters even minor are written so well The OP change is subtle, just pay attention to the group pic and flower field
