Interesting. I always thought he knew, but I never really thought of HOW he knew. It just never occurred to me.🤔

what's intriguing for me here, is that LaoLan (maomao's adopted father, and lakan's uncle) told Lakan that he should do this politely, differently... but the implication here is that Laolan KNEW that Jinshi is the crown prince! or else why would he tell his nephew lakan to do it politely to this "random real palance eunech" when lakan himself is the grand strategist, and they said before that everyone gets toppled by him except the imperial in command (the emperor, and by extension the crown prince). So laolan HAD to know jinshi is the crown prince when he just joined the conversation... now whether it's from observation or lahan told him his speculation on the way... or most likely, BECAUSE laolan was the one who delivered both babies at the time, and he might be involved with the babies being switched around, he might have known that jinshi, who looks ridiculously a lot like like Ah Duo and the late emperor ( and remembers how the young version of the late emperor looked like back then) would have realized that Jinshi is the crown prince and told Lakan to show him some respect. Right? am i bugging here?

Lakan isn't the head of the military. He's the chief administrator, and during peace time, the defacto day to day commander. But he doesn't lead troops, or fight. I imagine even during a time of war Lakan still wouldn't leave the capital. That's why he's a Commandant and not a General of some kind. Although I'm pretty sure normally Commandant would be a title or position as opposed to a rank, so a General could be appointed to be Commandant. Just like how the US has the joint chiefs. But I think this makes Lakan a lot more special, and a lot more powerful and dangerous behind the scenes. The Emperor obviously sees Lakan as nothing short of a wizard, and he came to the very wise conclusion that Lakan had no ambitions to rule or seize power. It was safe to put him in a uniquely influential position, and let him play watchdog over the rest of the court. He's definitely the most powerful person that isn't directly connected to the throne, and until Jinshi assumes his position I think an argument could be made that he's second only to the Emperor himself.

I have a journal where I jot down everything I think about each episode of The Apothecary Diaries, and I also end up writing a bunch of my theories and breakdowns for every part.

Love all the theorizing and discussion, one of my favorite things about your reactions! Plz continue doing so, it's so fun to watch you figure it all out. <3
