I love seeing how impactful sakuras upperclassman are to his growth. I hope this leads to closer relationships with them as we watch him in his journey with his vice captains.

He's in deep denial, because he can't afford not to be, not in his situation. As Tsubaki noted, and what can be gathered from him talking about food, Suzuri's whole being is about survival, literally living from meal to meal, hence he takes everything that isn't absolutely necessary as wasteful. But also, you said correctly that this fight is about protecting someone/dreams vs hunger and survival, but it's also not that simple. We'll see more in the next ep, so I'll stop here, but I'm glad you caught onto the survival drive of Gravel.
