Also a small not so fun fact: That courtesan with syphillis lost her nose. That's why her hair falls there to ''censor'' it.

This show has me by the BALLS! I can’t stand it. Those super quick frames of Maomao’s reaction to Lakan wanting to see her gave like Gojo/Frieren levels of “little gremlin about to go demon mode” aura. Loved it. I’d make the same reaction. The sighs that come out of me every time Lakan shows up on my screen. UGH.

Yeah I was about to come here to say this. it’s like, a sign of respect and love for the person who raised her, and by contrast, a sign of disrespect to Lakan who is never referred to as anything other than like the creep or that man by her (or by any of the people who knew Maomao growing up, in fact). Lakan is no father to her, but her adoptive father is.

2 frames. Literally 2 frames (4/60 of a second) is all it took for us to understand how much Maomao loathes Lakan. One of my favorite moments in this entire show!

Did anyone else think the faces that Flexie was making as the credits started was her struggling to decide if she should watch another episode?😂
Hope you feel better soon Flexie

Gosh this show does a REALLY good job at painting a picture of situations and making us think and feel certain ways, and then slowwwwly peels back the layers and you see things in a COMPLETELY different light. This is the type of show you'd want to rewatch to catch everything once you know. We finally get the Lakan reveal, now let's see what other layers are going to be shown 👀
Also, Maomao is such a fascinating character to me because even though we hear her thoughts, we still don't TRULY know what she's thinking and feeling about things. Like that vague comment about the emotion on her face in the start of the episode. What WAS she upset about? She didn't tell us, and it's not completely obvious.

LOL. Jinshi knows, Maomao knows Jinshi knows, Jinshi doesn't know that Maomao knows that Jinshi knows. You lived up to your Flexie title coming up with that assessment.
That being said, this was a great episode. I must have seen it a half a dozen times and I still get goosebumps at that ending scene, what with menacing atmosphere and the eerie music. Also, I really liked that little talk between Maomao and Surien about missed opportunities. That was very touching moment. Surien is a sharp woman and she's giving Maomao some sound advice.
Can't wait for the next one!

I think even with just what we know up until this point Maomao's feelings on romantic love are pretty understandable. She's been lucky in a lot of ways in that she has had people who care about her raise her, so she's fundamentally a good and happy person. But even with all that her "father" is a eunuch; her "grandmother" is a madam and her "sisters" are all courtesans. It's no wonder she is so circumspect and apathetic about the prospects of romantic love.

So I don't think Maomao knows that Jinshi knows Lakan is her father. Maomao is super unreliable as far as perspectives go if/when you do a rewatch you'll see all the times she goofs up. There's a part in the new season where her information is actually incorrect (it's not heavy plot details just little things that of course Maomao doesn't know she wasn't there.)

She calls her adoptive father, "father" - because he is her chosen family.
You will learn more in future episodes, since this was the only thing I could share without spoiling.

The face she makes is truly scary. We see maomao get happy and excited, occasionally frustrated, and mad only once, but never full on fury. That one look really does convey how she feels about lakan without needing to say it. Such a good episode!
