Lady Lihua is such wonderful woman. I can't help but like Lady Gyokuyou more, she does seem to be the best. But Lihua totally deserves to be an Empress in her out right too. Both of them have such tremendous poise and benevolence.

2025-04-04 23:50:07 +0000 UTCfor the food taster, it is not just the Mao Mao will know. rather if a taster's concubine dies from eating something it will be assumed to be poisoned. but if the taster doesn't die because she is not allergic she will still be assumed to have done the poisoning or at least not eaten enough of the food to check it thus failing as a taster. Basically if you die that is a shame and your family will be compensated. but if your lady dies you will be executed and your family will also be punished.

2025-01-19 18:59:59 +0000 UTCWhile they do eventually get around to stating things more openly this show is so different from other anime where 5 seconds after somebody does something clever someone else is like "omg they did something clever, let me explain it in excruciating detail for everyone in the back" I find this episode to be one of the more obtuse ones in the sense that it's a little hard to follow what's going on and what Maomao is actually thinking/doing here. If you're not actively thinking about everything it can be hard to grokk. It's mostly explained/confirmed better in the episodes to come. That said I love that this show respects the viewers intelligence and invites them to keep up with the intrigue! Some of it is a bit difficult because we're not all experts on Chinese court customs from this era, but if you pay enough attention through the context you can mostly keep up.

2025-01-19 03:33:23 +0000 UTCI think one of big picture thing about this anime is ‘who is Jinshi really’ like its asked multiple times in show, outside of that i think its going to be a bunch of mini mysteries that mao mao helps solve. Kinda like tv mystery dramas have episodic mysteries while also insinuating a larger seasonal or series mystery that gets revealed over time.

2025-01-17 06:14:56 +0000 UTCeveryone else essentially just dies or is crippled if they eat poison so everytime a taste tester eats they are gambling their lives. but its not like they have a choice either way because them refusing the job would likely be grounds for execution but yes they are nervous because they don't want to eat poison and die.

2025-01-17 00:37:40 +0000 UTCNot sure if you caught it cause there was a lot happening but Lady Lishu’s food taster switched the dishes so that she would have to eat the fish, because she thought she didn’t like fish. Essentially the food taster was trying to mess with her. However she didn’t realize that Lady Lishu was actually allergic to fish so that could’ve ended up badly, hence why she freaked out when Maomao said that. BUT ALSO by switching the dishes, that meant the soups were also switched, and the soup was ACTUALLY poisoned. But not by the food taster, so, we have a mystery third person who actually did try to poison Lady Lishu. Why? That’s the question…

Like, Spy Family, for example, is very much a slice of life anime but never gets lost in the sauce because it has the whole Operation Strix thing. So far in this I don't know where it is going. And honestly that's a good thing, it seems like you can't truly know what the episodes will be about or in what direction it's going to take you. It's very exciting in a way that not many anime of this genre are.
