But he loved her and I think in someway she might of even loved him but just didn't know what to do with those feelings at the time, it's obvious that those times and gifts that Himmel gave her mean so much to her. Truly beautifully tragic. I also love the fact that we got another example of really specific and neat folk magic that does a specific task, it's so fascinating.

Tremendous episode. Something i just realized is that there were bells ringing when Himmel gave the ring to Fireren and if you go back to episode 1 right before the bells start ringing for Himmels funeral Frieren kinda gasps like something hit her, then she starts crying at the grave and is looking at the ring afterwards. We know she has a tremendous memory, she was definitely remembering when Himmel gave her the ring

It was gentle, pure, and completely understanding that she simply wasn’t in a place to understand and reciprocate it at the time, but hopeful she would in the future. So tragically beautiful and well executed in every aspect…and the symbolism of the clock tower as to say time is the only thing standing between their love….uyyyyyyyyyy it hurts

Also something interesting in ep1; pay attention to what Frieren is holding and looking at immediately after Himmel's burial, before Heiter starts talking.

Himmel's love is so beautiful in that it doesn't seem to matter to him if he's loved back as much as he wants Frieren to one day understand that she is/was loved.

And to really sink the knife in that time stands between them being together, the clock tower was framed as standing between the two multiple times in the flashbacks :'( I assume as you said Himmel knew that she, being an elf, wouldn't understand his or even her own emotions in time (she herself said a while back that elves as a species struggle to form romantic connections). And rather than try to push her into something she wasn't ready for he just patiently waited and held on hoping she would at least return one last time to see the meteor shower with him before he passed.
