If not for some reason, they were for sure in line to take the reins of the finn/jake dynamic for that era. They even did the title card pose. It would have been interesting to see if they were going to expand on them further if they were able to make a longer finale.

I'm not sure if this is just a fan theory or if this was actually confirmed, but Shermy, the little white cat boy from the finale of Adventure Time, is Finn's reincarnation. So it's commonly believed that Beth, Jake's descendant, is also Jake's reincarnation. Showing us they really do always end up together as best friends, like when they were Shoko and her Tiger.
