a family friend of mine had been noticing bees in their house for a while now. they went outside and observed bees swarming a certain section of their roof, buzzing in and out of a crevice. they hired a professional to come out who used a heat sensor to detect a beehive in their ceiling!
this professional whom i like to call the "bee-guy," predicted that the bees had been there about 2-3 years. the family friend is pretty sure that their bee infestation came from the neighbors who actually have beehives in their backyard.
the cost to remove this hive was ~$500, and the family friend has to hire somebody else to repair the ceiling and roof. i didn't get to witness the full extraction, but apparently, the bee-guy had a vacuum and a scraping device. he saved a lot of honeycombs!
the family friend was nice and gifted me one of the combs to eat. a little chunk is filled with SO MUCH HONEY that it's easy to get sick off its richness. i thought i'd find at least one bee (dead or alive) stuck inside the sweet honey goo, but there wasn't. (thank goodness!) the white part you see is actually bee wax that you can ingest, but it's honestly a weird texture to chew and swallow in my opinion.
