They wouldn't give him ANY vocal lessons and one of SM's vocal couches told him that he'll NEVER be a singer and to only work on his dancing. It was TAEMIN that refused to accept that, he started training on his own and when Onew and Jonghyun saw how much it meant to him THEY took the time to teach him, Onew gave him his first ever vocal lesson on the roof of the SM building and Jonghyun became his main voice teacher and worked with him A LOT. After a lot of hard work Taemin improved by leaps and bounds, so in 2012, when Immortal songs season 2 asked SHINee to send a member to compete, they sent Taemin (he was the only main dancer competing and he was against plenty of renowned vocalists, but he still won many rounds), there a renowned vocal coach heard him sing, and saw his potential and asked him to let her train him. the rest his history. As you can see, it had NOTHING to do with SM, if he listened to them, he would still be just a main dancer with barely any lines and DEFINITELY not a soloist.

And after 6 years, he still remains my one and only bias. Jonghyun would have been my wrecker if he was still physically here with us.
