Satyr x Swordsman Style Test
Added 2025-04-18 19:09:56 +0000 UTCI took a little bit of time over the past couple days to explore some different options for this one shot. As usual I am trying to fence myself in from having too many options that will overwhelm me so here's what I'm trying to do this time.
Art Talk
I think I'm going to try a method of treating my digital tools like they're traditional ones. I started experimenting with this last summer by having brushes at fixed sizes I wasn't allowed to change to simulate having specific sizes of Microns pens for example.
In this case I added more pressure sensitivity to the Xerox pencil brush I shared a couple months ago to give it the same width range as the brush I used for Libby & Holly but I also made another version that's got a max size of 70 pixels, a real chunky boi that I'll use for outlining or decorative foliage elements, of which I hope there are MANY.
Every single time I start a new project I am flooded with this feeling of "but what if this time it really sucks?" π and I know the antidote is to set up some restrictions, trust the process and give myself a lot of room to change things as I work. Don't be surprised if you see dialog or even character names change in the dialog as I start sharing pagesπ that's just "the process," and I'm going to try to show as much of it as I can without getting really self-conscious haha.
Years ago I picked up this book at a thrift store, it's basically a printed featurette on the making of Fantasia with all kinds of behind the scenes info, but whenever I start using a lot of green and ochre I think of it because of the color palette. It's a bit of far flung reference, but I can't help being infected by the Disney influence.
Then again, it's probably not so far flung with the "centuarettes."
I'm in the process of making roughs right now and I'll have some pages to show next week if things go to plan π

2025-04-24 20:40:26 +0000 UTCThe more I've let this sit the more I feel confident in the color direction so I think I'll just run with it :) Mechanical pencils have been one of my favorite physical drawing tools ever since childhood just because of that constant fine line and really long lasting eraser-- I should look into trying out something that feels similar digitally too, thanks for the tip :)

One of my current favorite brushes is a mechanical pencil whose grain and pressure sensitivity are very similar to yours, seeing the size increasing as I press harder is an oddly satisfying feeling, kind of like using a real pencil. Itβs one of the reasons I enjoy working with it so much. :D That being said, I really like this projectβs direction, if thatβs the one youβll choose to pursue ππ§‘π

Gods, I feel this in my SOUL. My current nsfw comic project is in the finish line and I'm preparing for the next one and I want the visuals to be stylized, fairytale-esque with a limited colour palette, and I'm... very unsure whether I can pull it off or not. Reading posts like this from an artist whose work I thoroughly enjoy is really reassuring. Thank you for the insight into your process! π
