Satyr Sketchbook + project thoughts

Hello everyone and happy Monday! I'm going to try to post sketchbook updates on Fridays, although I missed my chance this past Friday because I was fixated on getting the CYOA updated!

These are no particular satyrs, just things I was drawing while waiting for the poll results to resolve. The spearman here still has a beard because I didn't decide until getting ready to post the options for the male lead that at least one of them should be cleanshaven, for the variety :3

I've been trying to figure out how to make the style of this comic visually fresh for myself without throwing out all the stuff I've learned on Libby & Holly. So I don't know if I'll change up my brush or just approach the color differently. I have settled on a handful of visual influences I really like for the simplicity of color and also for the line styles. I'm always trying to fit in Barbie homages and the satyr's hoof floofs were designed basically with this look in mind :D

Another influence floating around my brain is going to be Ivan Bilibin (a big influence on Little Bird's Bath) and 1920s cartoonists as I recently picked up a book on each. After TheInsaneum made a post doing a study after this artist: Ethel Hays.

If I can siphon off a little bit of this light linework and simple coloring for my own purposes I'll be pretty happy. :)

I usually put together 4-6 really important reference images as my guiding star for the style of a project and since this one will be short and sweet (relatively) I could embrace something fun knowing I'll be coming back around to familiar territory in Libby & Holly Ch.4 before long anyways.

I've got some Daisy drawings I've been working on that I'll be sharing with you all later this week! Thanks for reading!

I remember the first time I ever saw the original Barbarella comic interior art I was so struck by the color choices. I always assumed that it was purely artist intent but now I've come to realize more likely a lot of those choices came from doing things on the cheap 😂 Pavel Orinyansky is totally new to me but I think I've seen Boris Zvorykin's work before, probably mis-attributed to Ivan Bilibin honestly because there's some strong similarities in the kinds of palettes they use! Thanks for the recs! :D

I too find myself attracted to art with simple color schemes and distinct linework like the ones found in graphic designs for tees, posters and such. And thanks to you, I have also grown quite fond of Ivan Bilbin’s work 💜 Speaking of Slavic artists who have done illustrations in a similar fashion, may I suggest Boris Zvorykin and Pavel Orinyansky, assuming you’re not familiar with them yet?
