Libby & Holly Ch3 cover art explorations

Those of you who have been here a while might remember in some previous cover art posts that I mentioned DragonBall manga covers being an influence ⤵️ Not so much in theme as in the format of a consistent frame for the characters to interact with.
I was attracted to the creative restriction of big figure, small figure for the first two chapters but since this is when Libby & Holly really get together I felt like they deserved to be on the same plane.
The cover feels a little bit it less dynamic since they're both on the same plane but I think in order to have them interacting in this tangled up kinda way it was worth it :) I suppose I could have tried to add in some books to the foreground but in a way this chapter has the least to do with books of all of them so far.
In my mind I thought "oh I'm going to copy Toriyama and everyone will know I am copying Toriyama" but looking back...it's nothing like Toriyama at all and you probably wouldn't know that was the influence if I hadn't written all this. Now if I ever draw Libby and Holly riding on a cute vehicle like this silly pinup from last fall, that might be a little bit more obvious of an influence😅

I'm really pleased that they worked out that way in the end. I was trying to open up myself to the opportunity of making the cover something that isn't literally a scene from the book but is just a fun image, but you're right! In terms of their progression they are a literal description of the story too!
