Experiment 76 Part 2 (Scenes 41-51)

Scene 41:

Ivana swiftly stepped through the swirling portal, her diminutive frame landing gently on the hard ground on the other side. She instinctively stretched out her arms, seeking balance and stability during the transition.

Since the portal was at ground level during this attempt, making the transition between portals was far less disorienting than her previous experience. From Ivana's perspective, the sensation of entering and exiting the portal remained unchanged from her prior traversal, which she took as a positive sign. Any significant alterations in the portal's behavior could potentially trigger a cascade of undesirable effects, further complicating her quest to regain her original stature.

Scene 42:

The moment Ivana had programmed came with an unmistakable "clunk" of the breaker as the portals shut down instantly, leaving her no opportunity to look back at them. The room fell eerily quiet, the only sound being the low hum of the machinery still running. As she glanced back, she didn't feel any different, which was a concerning sign. She certainly felt closer to the ground than she would have liked, just as before. Then again, her new height had been disorienting the entire time, so she considered the possibility that her mind was playing tricks on her. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that the machine may have done nothing at all.

"I was so sure this would grow me back. Maybe not to my original height, but at least several inches, if not more! Maybe if I look at the parameters again, see what happened, I can do some tweaking and try again..." she pondered to herself.

Scene 43:

Determined to make a difference, Ivana headed back to the console, her child-sized sneakers squeaking against the hard floor. As she walked, she thought out loud, "Maybe inputs 2, 5, and 46 are the best ones to increase, maybe reduce input 3 as well..." She knew she needed to analyze the data first, but she couldn't help but think ahead, trying to predict what the data might reveal.

Scene 44:

As Ivana approached the console, her thoughts began to fade, replaced by a dawning realization. "Wait... No... It can't be...." she muttered, her pace slowing as she observed the console. Just moments ago, her hands had hovered over the controls at roughly her eye level, her shoulders and chest aligned with the lower part of the machine. But now, her shoulders seemed to be even lower than the console, even at this distance.

"Maybe it's just my eyes..." she attempted to convince herself, despite her growing sense of unease. Undeterred, she continued towards the console.

Scene 45:

Denial was no longer an option. As she took her final steps to stand in front of the console, Ivana could clearly see her shoulders below the bottom edge. Her eye level had dropped significantly, and she could feel her head tilting upward to see the console's screens and buttons, which had once been within her line of sight.

Scene 46:

Ivana stood before the towering console, her arms thrown back, hands gripping the back of her head and running through her hair. "No... no... what have I done???" she exclaimed, staring up at the machine that now loomed over her.

Scene 47:

The urge to cry threatened to overwhelm her, but Ivana held herself together, her expression one of disappointment. Determined to stay positive, she focused on the future and the possibility of success. She began to speak to herself as she often did for motivation in private moments. "Ok Ivana, you messed up. But you didn't shrink... really small. It could have been worse. You need to take a step back, no more testing today. Send the data off to be looked at when you get back home, evaluate what went wrong, and fix it for the next time around." This pep talk helped steady her nerves.

Reaching up, she pressed a few buttons on the console, straining to do so in her diminished state, and confirmed the data had been sent to her home computer. Once again, she would have to return to the drawing board.

Scene 48:

As Ivana made her way outside, she had a sudden realization that driving might be more challenging now. She had no idea exactly how much she had shrunk. As she opened the door of her truck, it felt heavier than ever before. After opening it, she placed her hand on the inner handle, which was now positioned much higher than before. Gazing into her truck, she was struck by how much larger it seemed.

Scene 49:

"Another obstacle..." she groaned, gritting her teeth as the mental anguish took an even greater toll on her. She chastised herself for being so hasty in testing her modifications, now having to suffer the consequences.

"I have to try..." she said, determined, as she clambered into the truck like a small child.

Scene 50:

Once seated, Ivana realized just how bad her situation was. While driving at 4'4" had been manageable, her new, smaller height made the task daunting, if not impossible. Her heart sank as her feet barely made contact with the floor, unable to comfortably reach the pedals even with the seat pulled forward. The top of her head didn't even clear the steering wheel, her eyes unable to see over it, the glowing car gauges beaming directly into her face.

She considered using some towels from the back of her truck to sit on and boost her height, but that would only raise her already nearly-dangling feet, making it even more difficult to reach the pedals.

Scene 51:

Ivana looked up at the windshield, accepting the reality that driving simply wasn't an option. Taking a deep breath, she swallowed her pride for the sake of safety.

She was going to have to call someone for help.
