KING KONG (1933)

I am so happy to see you are following the AFI top 100. imbd is rather biased toward modern film and as such they really aren't very objective about film. This film isn't only noteworthy for its special effects but also that it is one of the first movies to use a soundtrack. If you look at the 1931 Dracula for instance it is very silent throughout.

Also, one of the very first movie score. Before 1931 I'm not sure if there were any films with a soundtrack other than during the silent era when it WAS just music.

"Women just can't help being a bother." “It was beauty that killed the beast.” Agree that this must have wowed audiences in the theater in 1931. I am glad the movie is pre-code. Some of the suggestive dress and revealing of skin (and the kiss) may not have survived the code? You got a few chuckles out of the ‘gore’ – all the killing things and people falling to their doom as you said. I did too. The effects (stop-motion animation) were apparently groundbreaking at the time. Further, "the 1933 King Kong has a critically acclaimed and influential score by Max Steiner, considered by many to be the first great modern film score."
