The Pansy Craze really did happen! I've gone back and done a little bit of research into LGBTQ lifestyles in the 1920s and for a time there the US was a little more open to gay and trans people. From the 20s to the mid-30s there were vibrant scenes in some of the major cities. The Great Depression, and eventually WW2, pushed us back into the shadows (you can imagine our Valentina had to hide out during that time) until the late 60s. Decades of progress were lost to shifting views and fear of people being different. Think of where we'd be now if we had those decades back. And really, things haven't gotten truly better until the past 6 years or so. Ever since gay marriage was passed as the law of the land back in 2015. Not long ago in comparison, but for some reason it feels like ages have passed since then....
