Hello !

I began this movie having in mind all of the American war movies, so I was expecting something like Jarhead, with combat but also funny moments, rock music, drama things but just to serve the characters. Mosul is nothing like that. This movie is a realistic war movie, filmed to make us feel like we are following these soldiers like their shadows, almost in real time. And there are no funny moments, no music, and the drama is about real stuff which can happen during wars, real atrocities and inhuman stuff.

For sure, at some point, I questioned Kawa's honesty but it didn't last for a long time. I understood quickly the story was more about him getting involved into this group, to finally be a part of the "family", considering the Major as a father, not asking questions anymore about the mission. Until he learns the truth at the end, why a lot of the "brothers" died : to save all of their families. And after saving one, they find strength to go on and go for another mission. During which a few will die, a new guy will be welcomed, again, and again, and again.

Yes, this movie was made to be realistic, not only for how it was filmed but also written, for the characters to be complex and not good/bad. I thought showing Jensen cleaning stuff was to push the idea of the father figure and also to make him more human (and it's no matter what the case), but it was really a good preparation for his death. It's fun because I guessed early that the mission was a personal one (because they were doing it against the approval of their superiors, because of how much they were hiding, providing themselves with the illegal market etc), but for me it was really a one-shot thing, like I thought it was to save Jensen's daughter or something like that. And yes, that reveal makes us reconsider the entire movie, from the beginning, when the question of being married and a soldier is not approved by Kawa, and the others' reactions. I kept that moment for ytb (and I didn't notice the one with the key you mention). And no, I didn't google the movie, so thanks for the info about Marrakech !

I'm glad you also enjoyed the movie. This movie had so much going for it. I had a lot of similar expectations that you had when I first watched this movie. Glad my expectations were all wrong because this movie was so much more. I liked how from the very beginning they kept the viewers guessing: Kawa has no ID, no one wants to talk about the mission, SWAT is trying to hide from the government, etc. It helped heighten the tense atmosphere and keep viewers paying attention. The engagement scenes were also really good. I liked how these guys were not perfect and were making mistakes. Like when Waleed missed his grenade toss and ended up wounding Kawa. or the really confusing close combat fight. Felt very realistic. I liked how they handled Jensen's death. First they show you a couple of scenes where he cleans up stuff even in a war torn area, and you think, "what a random quirk lol" When he does it again and you think nothing of then BOOM. My jaw also dropped when that happened. It was so unexpected that my brain refused to process it and I had to replay that scene. But I think my favorite part of the movie really had to be when they revealed the nature of the mission. The whole time I was watching the movie, I assumed the mission was to take out a big evil terrorist man. So when they got the the final building and they wanted to stealth their way in, I was thinking, "what's the point? you want to drop your AKs for pistols and knives? Surely this big evil terrorist man will have a lot of guards and defenses? why drop the AKs?" Then Waleed pulls a key out of his boot and puts it in the door, and I thought same as you, "wtf is this key? why do you have it? this makes no sense." then you realize that the target was not a big evil terrorist man but Waleed's family. That just broke me. It changed the whole context of the movie for me. I thought the team was impatient and bloodthirsty. When in reality, they were anxious and worried for their loved ones. That was an amazing twist for me I don't know if you've edited your reaction for youtube yet, but after knowing the true nature of their mission, some of the earlier scenes with Waleed make more sense. You see Waleed move his apartment key to his new boots at the beginning. you get to better understand why he got so angry when Kawa said that if he was married he wouldn't be out there. You get more context as to why Jensen had to reassure Waleed that they were just staying there for 10minutes. That was such a good twist. I like Kawa. Both as a character and as a proxy for the viewer. Kawa has no idea what's going on, just that the daesh are bad and need to be stopped. Then he sees SWAT acting shady, but between SWAT and the daesh, still going to pick SWAT. Then in the end, when he also realizes what the mission was all about, it's the same feeling as the viewers get at that point. This was a really good movie and I'm glad you liked it. Hope it doesn't stay with you longer than it should. :P Also, in case you have not Googled it yet, the movie was filmed in Marrakesh, Morocco.
