Hello !

As a total noob of the cyberpunk genre and all of the universe Ghost In The Shell, I warned you I wouldn't get references of the movie right away. And for sure, I had some Matrix or Westworld vibes, but I really discovered everything here. And maybe that's why I was totally lost during the first twenty minutes, just trying to understand the rules of this universe, these "ghosts" put in droids, what it meant for humans/droids, who was who. And the movie is not explaining things right away, you have to follow the characters and through their discussions, you're gonna pick up clues.

But no worries, being a little lost at the beginning, didn't stop me from appreciating this movie a lot. I was impressed by the fact everything was based on a manga written in the nineties, and I loved that they put so much attention on the picture, creating that futuristic and cyberpunk mood, but also taking entire scenes to create an atmosphere, playing with symmetry and the lights etc. And I was even more interested in all of the metaphysic questions Kusanagi asks herself and all of the symbolic things done around the mirror, the reflections, visually and in the lines. At the end of this movie, I had more the impression of watching the prologue of a big franchise than to close a story.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

The characters in GitS are cyborgs not robots/droids, they are humans with a certain amount of cybernetic enhancement, so they still need some food & sleep. Some have very little enhancements like Togusa through to The Major and Batou who have full body replacement where only their brain is still human. Most everyone has an enhanced brain (cyber brain) at least which connects to the computers though so humans can be hacked. Watching this film for the first time was certainly confusing for me too, it’s definitely worth a second watch at some point. The movie has a sequel by the same director Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, there are also the Stand Alone Complex and Arise continuities which each have various seasons, films and OVAs and next year there is going to be a new Ghost in the Shell anime series.

Hello ! You're truly passionate about Ghost in the Shell, I love to see it and I love to read passionate people talking about their passion 😊 Yes, it was really new to me, to discover this universe and also the genre cyberpunk, but I appreciated that first taste of it. I don't know if I'll be interested to watch/read other things from the franchise itself but I'm definitely interested to discover more about cyberpunk. I already had that feeling it's a genre which could please me after watching an actual play of people playing to... Cyberpunk πŸ˜…

Hello Laura! As a sci-fi anime enjoyer, Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite franchises! It also happens to be the franchise that I'm most critical about because of its source material and just how many times the series re-imagines itself, haha. The manga author is contentious for his sequels after the original manga but no one can deny the intrigue of the world he created in Ghost in the Shell. He masterfully blended a near-future world that you could believe was plausible that was filled with western movie references and military otaku trivia. Unless you've been exposed to a bit of cyberpunk media in the past, it's normal for the technobabble terms to go over your head. I'm sure it'll make more sense as you continue to be exposed to the genre! (If you ever go back to read the original manga, you might even start to see the cracks where they were trying to write about technology or subjects ahead of their time... even if it's a 'for better or for worse' kind of thing.) The theme of souls, humanity, and artificial intelligence was central to Ghost in the Shell, and although the rest of the franchise will reboot itself several times from here on out, those topics and the main characters in this film are always central to the plot in every release. Without the burden of having to learn so much all at once, you might find Ghost in the Shell a completely different experience if you rewatch it again one day! Either way, I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😊
