Hello !
Beginning this new season, I had the impression we never left our guys. Maybe because we didn't have a real time jump and we have our characters who didn't change, who are still in the same mood and contexts. Nothing that we missed. So this first episode is more to remind us all of the narrative arcs we have right now, with all of the political situation going on, with Homelander who killed someone just like that, with Starlight who left and now her supporters facing Homelander's little army etc.
And it was a good way to introduce what the characters are gonna face this season. Hughie's dad is having a stroke and maybe because of that he is gonna question his place in the group, he's gonna want to put his family first. We can have a potential triangle between Frenchie, Kimiko and Collin. MM dealing with his daughter (and now even more that Todd died… officially like that), Annie who doesn't want to take her costume again when everyone would need her to do it, Homelander who doesn't want to share the lights… And, the best one, Butcher who seems to, wait… change ?? OMG.

Ooooh, I love your theory ! You're right, no one else saw Joe, only Butcher, and the memories they exchanged... About when Butcher saved Joe, right ? What if it never happened and it's in fact something he felt guilty of, like a new brother he didn't/couldn't save. I'm gonna pay attention to that now !

I'm working under the assumption that you've watched all three episodes at this time so I'm going to drop a theory that makes more sense if you've seen all three episodes. if you haven't yet, then maybe skip or delete my comment. O_o Theory time: I don't think Becca is the only hallucination Butcher is having. I think that Joe is probably also a hallucination. it's likely a manifestation of his conscience; Becca being the angel and Joe being the devil. Butcher always seems to interact with joe alone, and no one has acknowledged his existence yet. So for now, I'm going to assume that Joe is also a hallucination.
