I LOVED THIS EPISODE !!! Like really a lot, like it might be my favorite episode of the anime so far. I know that, for our characters, in real life, nothing happened, you can tell me that nog big action moments happened. But for Thorfinn, this episode means so much, it's just insane how deep it is. Everything was symbolic in Thorfinn's dream because we have to remember that nothing is real, everything is created by his subconscient. Meaning that when Thors is saying this bad stuff to him, it's because Thorfinn believes that his dad would be mad at him.
In his dreams, Thorfinn had Askeladd. Who is not with all of the other warriors fighting, who was the one here to open his eyes about the truth, who was the one to jump into the battlefield to protect him, who was the one to scream all of that to motivate him. Thorfinn's subconscient is associating Askeladd with someone who is wize, who protects him, who pushes him to be better. A mentor. And my heart can explode just thinking about it. For sure, the discussion was also really symbolic with all of these warriors, and persons that Thorfinn killed, who were not enemies because there is no real enemy, and yes he's like them, meaning that, like them, he regrets all of what he did.
And that's it, Thorfinn finally accepted his past and regrets it, he cried and apologized. So finally, he can get out of that, and now he has to go for his real fight : becoming the person he wants to be. Again, so symbolic : when you lived a traumatic experience, you have to feel at peace with it, before trying to reborn, and that's gonna be a life fight, to not come back in that hole. It told you, I can write an essay about this episode. Definitely (one of) my favorite episode.

I agree so much with you about this episode being one of the best. I already analyzed all of the things about Thorfinn representing Thors mad at him, Askeladd guiding and pushing him, but just to come back tone one thing you said : yes, it's really impactful to see Thorfinn crying (like when he smiles in fact !) because the guy is so empty since so long with his emotions, just animated by hate.

2024-06-07 07:58:42 +0000 UTCBest episode of Vinland Saga and probably my favorite episode of any TV Show, animated or otherwise. Culmination of all of Thorfinn's anger, grief, regret. It was all for this moment. Feeling ashamed of what his father would think of him, imagining Askeladd defending him and guiding him, seeing all of the people he killed. Such an incredible episode. For me the most impactful moment is Thorfinn crying. His tears falling onto the face of someone he killed is just so symbolic. I have never seen a more earnest representation of regret. I've seen many different redemption stories before but none of them hit as hard as Thorfinn's. We see that Thors have the same demons as Thorfinn, he also had people he killed haunting him. Thorfinn finally understand his father completely. He imagines his father felt the same regret for his life of violence. Askeladd standing on top of the column is amazing too. Thorfinn recognizes that Askeladd was different from the other Vikings. He wasn't on the surface like his father, but he was 1 step higher than all the violent warriors. And finally, Askeladd telling Thorfinn to "take all the people you killed with you, and climb. That's your true battle". Such amazing writing. Carrying your past sins and learning to accept them and atoning for them. Shoutout to Thorfinn's voice actor too. His scream when he was climbing was fantastic. And the animation losing its color, except the blood on his nails. Incredible. Vinland Saga Season 2 is peak story telling.
