Hello !

This episode could have been named "Lessons of life for Thorfinn". First, we have Snake recognizing in Thorfinn's eyes someone who can fight and who would maybe have that instinctive reflex of defending himself. Like Thorfinn recognized in Snake's eyes how Askeladd was looking at him. Snake taught him that his body still wants to live, and even more than that, he's not someone who is giving up, who would accept to die.

We have here again the proof about what I say since episode 5 of season 1 : emotionally Thorfinn never evolved, inside of his dreams he still pictures himself as that little kid. His nightmares are all about accepting his past, what he did when he killed all of these people, and showing how afraid he was/is still now. His discussion with Einar was also a lesson of life for Thorfinn : he's representing the people who killed his family, he's going for revenge, but he finally renounces. Because Einar can see that Thorfinn had his reasons to be there, lived such a hard life which is still torturing him now. Lesson for you, Thorfinn : your enemy is not a villain, he has reasons to act, he thinks he's fighting for good reasons ; there is no good and bad.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

I love so much to explore Thorfinn's character during the beginning of this season, to go that deep with his psychology... So meaningful, so symbolic.

This is the episode where I realized Season 2 of Vinland Saga was going to be special. Thorfinn seeing Askeladd in Snake and his body deciding to act is really cool. And when he says "Do I want to live? Live, and do what?", is really the most important question of his arc. Thorfinn's nightmare is haunting and him recalling the old lady that helped him makes sense. Thorfinn the child died that day and he never emotionally processed that. He imagines himself beheading the old woman personally because that's might as well be what he did by bringing the Vikings to their village. Einar finally brings a new perspective to Thorfinn. He puts a face to his victims, even if Thorfinn wasn't the one that attacked his village. And he questions Thorfinn about his suicidal behavior and how he is being selfish with his self pity. It's the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
