Hello !
To begin this second season like that, with the presentation a new character is such a good idea and for many reasons. First, we ended season 1 with a little thing about him at the end, suggesting he would be important, and by beginning with him and only him, first episode, it's to insist on the fact that Einar is gonna be a main character from now on. Second, because it's to make us see how he lost his family, he lost the idea of calling a place home and he also lost hope… until he met Thorfinn. We understand with his lines that meeting our boy is gonna change everything for him.
And last and in fact major reason why it's a good idea to do things like that : because we begin this season 2 like we began season 1, with a character who is a slave. The writers are really making that subject about "slavery" and through that, losing hope, to not be free anymore, to not have any place to call home, the main subjects of this anime. And Thorfinn, who was so proud of not being a slave (but was kind of one for Askeladd), is now one ? How, why ?

You'll see that I will repeat that Einar is not the most clever guy, but I don't remember saying it for him not running to save his family. If it's the case, I'm sorry. I thought it more for the moment when he was seeing these guys taking that sick girl outside and the time it took him to understand why. And for the rest of the episodes, for me he's more acting because of his emotions, in a impulsive way, than because of thinking of stuff twice, making a real strategy and all. Not saying it's wrong or not, just it's like that : Einar is thinking with his heart.

2024-04-26 07:20:19 +0000 UTCThe second season is definitely a slow burn. It will take its time to develop its characters and themes. I think it surpasses the first season eventually, but it will take some time. When it comes to Einar, I think he just froze in shock. It isn't really a lack of intelligence that caused that. It's just how different people react differently under stress and pressure. And just because he is physically big doesn't mean he is a good fighter. So him trying to fight his captives would only end up with him getting harshly punished. Knowing your opinions on Season 1, I think you will love Season 2. And I bet you the opening and the ending songs will grow on you as episodes pass :)
