Hello !
I thought we would have an episode for the dual Askeladd/Thorfinn with the kid finally winning but Canute keeping his promise to stop the fight. But I forgot that, emotionally, Thorfinn is still that little kid blinded by rage and that, in front of a random guy like an awesome warrior like Thorkell, he's the best, but in front of Askeladd, he's that little kid again. The beginning and the end of this episode confirmed that impression I talk about since entire episodes, and him screaming his anger like that at the end proves also he's not close to change.
It was so interesting to learn all of that by Askeladd's background and it really amplifies the parallel between him and Thorfinn. They both had one parent being threatened/killed and they both wanted to have their revenge. But Askeladd chose a different path, the only one which can succeed in fact : to be patient, to hide his anger, to play with his enemy, to wait for the right time to attack, to be sure he's not gonna be discovered, and to have another purpose on mind and think about the future. Things that Askeladd can do because he evolved a lot emotionally as a kid, taking care of his mother, becoming the parent.

I get what you mean about Askeladd seing that Canute should be King, that maybe he sees in him what he saw in Thors. But I don't agree with him hating himself. I don't think that he has a particular opinion about himself in fact, not at all, about his actions or what. He just goes with things, day by day, seing his interest on everything, seing the interest of his people/country. And that's all.

2024-04-19 08:33:26 +0000 UTCIn regards to your comment about Askeladd's potential intention in regards to taking the throne in the future: I get the impression that Askeladd hates himself. He hates Vikings and he calls himself a Viking. He knows he is not honorable and he is not "beautiful" in the way he described it. I think he sees in Canute what he saw in Thors. Someone who is enlightened, someone who wants to do good things, someone who is better than him, morally. And I think he is okay with someone like that being the King. His mother wanted him to serve the hero Artorius. So he is hoping to find a hero on earth, someone he can serve and still keep his promise to his mother.
