Hello !

Just the day before, for the first three episodes, I was wearing my Iroh shirt, that embroidery I made myself of him visiting his son, that beautiful scene. So, clearly, to have Iroh mourning his son here, with Zuko being the only one to show him love and support, with the musical theme of "Leaves from the vine" at the back… It destroyed me. Even if I loved all of it, also that they used it at the end again to show Iroh going with Zuko on this journey, because he's not gonna give up on him, he's gonna be that support, that friend that he needs. AND WE STILL NEED THE THREE SCENE IN SEASON 2.

I had mixed feelings about the writers mixing all of these stories in Omashu but they talked about the blind revenge only guided by hate, making you like the bad guys, and the rough decisions you have to take in war, so it was good for me. I loved that we had the secret tunnels song, to use this story for the relationship between a brother and a sister was nice and well used here but… writers, you gave something to Katara/Zuko shippers earlier, it's cool, shippers can ship as long as everyone respects each other, and it was fun, but it means you have to give something for other shippers. Even more when this ship is the canon one.

I loved Bumi in this episode, but they made him "darker" than in the original show : the guy is crazy for sure, but he's also a lot of fun !

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

That scene at the funeral was such a nice touch made by the writers : they can't give us the tree scene in season 1, but they need to already talk about the relationship Zuko/Iroh, why it's such an important and amazing one, to talk about their backgrounds. So it was well done to put it here, and the little musical theme at the back was just to destroy us. You'll see it with the next two episodes : I'm okay for them to mix stories together, but it has to make sense and at some point, it can feel a little too much if they are doing it too much. I accepted the changes around Bumi because it served to talk about the war subject, the difficult choices you have to make during it, and Aang who disappeared and people who felt like he abandonned them. But yes, I disliked the secret tunnels arc : it was well used for the relationship between sibling (that they built all along the season, them being on separate "pages" but they find each other little by little, so a way to be together), but it felt like Kataang shippers were robbed. The end of the show, the final scene of the fight, is all Kataang and repairs that in my heart. But I think they're really gonna make the relationship evolves in a romantic way. Because I feel these writers want to respect the show and the fans, so they can't no-do it. But it might be even more subtil than into the original show.

That funeral scene was intense. The visuals. The acting. The music. Damn. I also had to pause after just to clean myself up. My favorite parts of the series is really when they do things like this that was not part of the original, but makes sense that it would have happened. It helps deepen what we've already enjoyed. I'm largely okay with all of the changes done in the series since they do make sense in the story that they are trying to tell, but I feel like because they're smashing together multiple episodes, they're not able to really explore any of the things they are changing. I would have loved to see more of Bumi being a tired and somewhat broken person after 100 years of war. Sure, it's such a departure from his original character, but it would have been interesting to explore this character further. But you're right, they only have so many episodes and really can't afford to do deep dives like that. Which is a shame. :( I did not like that they included the Cave of Two Lovers story here. It really felt like they just did it so that they can give us the singing nomads. Which was fun and I enjoyed them, but I felt that it was unnecessary. Also, because they already whipped out the cave of two lovers, I feel like they might now push the Aang-Katara relationship here. On the practical side of it, both actors are minors (I think 15 for Aang and 17 for Katara). So they're not going to push that because that's kinda dicey. But narratively, I think they're going to push the idea that strong relationships don't need to be romantic. Which is something that I'm okay with. Looking forward to the rest of your reactions :)
