Hello !

I thought this movie would only be a romantic comedy movie, but in fact by being this absurd at multiple occasions, it denounces the absurdity of some things in our society, it's also talking about a lot of deep subjects around mental health and metaphysics questions. The mind cloud which might kill Joe might be in fact his depression, he gave his life to a job he didn't like and then he gives it to a guy he doesn't know, he doesn't know who he truly is and prefers to follow what others are/want etc.

The movie is going far with the absurd, to denounce people going to work and being exactly the same, not counting at all, at a job which doesn't count at all, but also to find solutions to the little stories. The conclusion is going too far, but the rest is pretty well written and is letting time for the characters. The joke is well done but it's not important, what Joe thinks and how he's evolving is. But did he really evolve ? Learning he's gonna finally have a long life, he's not feeling "just great" again, and might never be "just great", always finding a little drama to add into it. He's human.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

"JOE VS THE VOLCANO" EXTENDED REACTION

Comments

the movie is an allegory... It's a movie about facing life. Joe battles a Volcano. I think in that scenario certain truths have a habit of coming out. That which is important bubbles up to the surface while the things meaningless maybe receded into the background. "Joe, what did you do?" "I bribed them. I bribed them into playing a song for us that will make our hearts burst."

after watching your reaction... I realized that many of Bill Murray roles are similar to this movie. You've seen certain Bill Murray movies, yes? For example in... Scrooged and The Razor's Edge and Groundhog Day... there may be a moment when Bill's character becomes enlightened... but he likes to obfuscate that moment though so that it's not obvious to the viewer when his character has turned around. There is a scene where he's reading a book in a cafe and suddenly he looks up listening to classical music and he's filled with joy. He looks around to see if anyone else "has awakened" because joy is something you want to share. He is looking around... aware that he has become aware. This is an early role for Tom Hanks, this was when he liked to goof around in his movies. Like in "Big" he plays a similarly and maybe in his older TV show as well with Peter Scolari. When Joe was alone in the ocean taking care of unconscious Patricia. This is when he comes to certain understanding... about things. He was unconcerned about the worries of life. He was "living" his best life on top of that makeshift raft. He was utterly alone in the world. With nothing but his hallucinations... and there he found peace. On the edge of disaster when approaching the end they say that is when we humans, we show our true character. The movie starts "Once upon a time..." and it is maybe like a stage play... maybe. Tom's character, I appreciate that he doesn't seem pretentious. He was thinking... about himself to look within... and he found himself boring, lol. Not sure what to make of that other than he is not "full of" himself. The hero in Joe is in there. He accepted the job to jump into a volcano and so he's going in... no matter what. One could only hope to have such a fairy tale life such as Joe's.

So Laura, which version of Meg Ryan did you like the best? 😊
