I'm not sure that all people who watched this movie understood the ending the same way. All along her life, Daughter was raised by Mother to be a good soldier, to think like the Droids, like Mother. All of the test is based on psychological dilemmas, like the one about sacrificing one person to save four other ones. And it's only when she succeeded to the final test, proving she thinks like them, that she passed the real test, the one to become a mother herself.
For me, at the end, Mother is okay for being killed because Daughter proves she can be a good mother : she came back for her brother, she was ready to be killed and kill for him. But she proved first she is like the Droids, she thinks like them, so it's another reason why they let her live to continue the experience and raise the new humanity. And I think they are totally right with that. Some viewers are gonna think that no, she's gonna prepare something behind her back, but I don't imagine it like that. Like I said, all of us didn't see the same end.
For me, Daughter is gonna accept because during the test to become a mother, she saw the world outside. She knows now no one is out there and her family wouldn't survive on its own. Oh, and for me, the Woman was in fact Number One : they needed someone from the outside, they made sure she would survive, they let her come to the place when Daughter was ready and they killed her when they didn't need her anymore.

I really think that people can interpret it in different ways, but that some things are pretty clear like the Other being in fact Number One. This movie was pretty complex but truly cool, like a big syfy puzzle π

2023-10-27 10:00:07 +0000 UTCI agree with how you read the ending and how the other one was probably no. 1. I was also thinking the same since, like you mentioned, she looked a lot like daughter. I really enjoyed the central conflict of trust and the back and forth of daughter. What really liked though was how they made mother. Not only was the voice acting really good, I like that they kept her movements and look very robotic, so that you don't forget that even if this thing *sounds like* it has emotions, it still just a robot. I didn't expect that mother would actually give daughter a chance though. I was fully expecting it to be like a Sarah Connor fight the Terminator ending since Daughter picked up the axe. I was very glad to be wrong. I was also thinking that it would be weird that the human race would all be related. The genetic diversity would be very bad, and as a species, they would probably not survive in the long run. But then, I was thinking, what if maybe the embryos are clones? And what if mother had altered some things in these clones' DNA that maybe removed the necessity for sex? Because if they are clones, then they can just keep making new embryos instead of doing it the old fashioned way. Them being clones would also make sense because that means that the only variable mother has to consider is the upbringing; she wouldn't need to worry about the genetics because it's all the same. That's my theory on this. I doubt there will be a sequel though since I think this story is pretty complete already in my opinion. Still wondering about that mouse though.
