The third episode was my favorite to Heather. It’s what really sold me on the show because the first two episodes didn’t really move me that much. The emotional aspect of episode 3 is what sold me. Season 1 is my favorite out of the two seasons ❤️

Franina

you should wait until you see ep 4 👀 just give it one final push

This is an adult anime. The topics explored are not easy to portray and still, they did such a good job with it!

Lulu-chan

This is one of the few modern animes that I compare to the classics because it touches on deep meaning and controversial matters. The main character also is very well written.

Here we go! A new one for me!

Lead poisoning is extremely Serious, Back in the day as Lulu-chan said not just in China and Japan but Europe as well. Used Lead in Women's Make-up it was all the rage the new fad, but they also used it in Lead paints in homes and used lead everywhere. So when Lead poisoning started to happen in people most Dr's where confused as to what was the root cause of it. It took years decades for them to realise that what was killing all these women, children and men was the Lead. They banned it in paint, homes and in Make-up I don't know the exact number of deaths caused by it but I do know it was a lot of people.

I don't know this anime. I'm watching it blind with you guys. If you like period piece animes, check out Samurai Champloo and Rurouni Kenshin. I think they're more your style. Check out Ninja Scroll too, awesome movie. Alright so I finished watching the 3 episodes with you guys but I'm going to drop out. I was finding myself bored and disinterested. I liked the animation but that's about it. Good luck with the rest of the series guys.

That episode is very emotional for me too. Mostly because I'm happy for Fuyou who is a rarity for those times, being able to marry her childhood sweetheart 💓 Btw, Maomao comparing her to a cotton rose is not random as the name Fuyou literally means cotton rose (or Hibiscus mutabilis), which really changes it's colour from day to night.

Lulu-chan

12th??? lol AD let’s go! Also Heather n Jason, don’t feel bad if u don’t remember names lol. I honestly only remember Maomao n Jinshi. I’m glad u guys are watching this, definitely different than the ones u’ve watched so far. Also Heather crying in episode 3 lol, I was tearing up too. Definitely a Scorpio.

I'm also a fan of the novels and read them all, up to the last published. Glad to have another thing in common with you Victoria! ❤️

I forgot to mention, the poisoned powder Maomao investigates is white lead used in cosmetic face powder. This isn’t fiction - lead-based powders were genuinely popular among noblewomen in historical China and Japan, prized for their pale, smooth finish. It was a common ingredient in makeup worn by European nobility as well. However, long-term use caused real cases of lead poisoning, harming both women and their infants - exactly as shown in the anime.

Also you will find out more as the show goes on, but only some courtesans sell their bodies. The higher class ones only sell their “skills”, aka dancing, playing instruments, reading poetry, etc.

So this is one of my favorite shows. It is based on the Japanese light novels, of which there are currently 16 (only 15 have been translated so far). I own all of them and frequently reread them because they are THAT good. They also include many more details than the show. Season 1 is based on the first 2 novels, and S2 is based on 3 & 4. There are actually 2 separate manga adaptations by 2 different artists, but the anime is farther along than the manga adaptations. “Maomao” basically means “cat-cat”, which is why she is given cat features in certain scenes when she is happy or excited. The rear palace is home to 2,000 women, so you can bet that they spend most of their time gossiping since they have zero entertainment! That’s why there is always some rumor going around. Maomao grew up in the pleasure district and was basically raised at Verdigris House. That’s why she has such extensive knowledge LOL The “xiao” nickname Gaoshun gives Maomao means “little”, so when he calls her “Xiaomao” he’s calling her “little Mao” or “little cat” So happy you guys are watching!!

😂😂😂👍💯❤️ can’t wait to read this one on the next vid! Thanks Lulu-chan 😉

Ok, that was a lot to take in… lol And so much to discuss! Let’s go chronologically: 1 - Maomao’s character (first impressions): From the very first episodes, Maomao stands out as someone highly observant, curious to a fault, and unafraid to speak her mind when logic is on her side. Despite her plain appearance and quiet demeanor, she hides a sharp, analytical mind and a mischievous streak that often slips through in her reactions. She’s practical, detached when dealing with unpleasant things, and shows early on that her fascination with medicine and poisons isn’t just knowledge, it’s genuine passion. 2 - Maomao is super smart for that time and she looks younger than she really is, being 17 at the start of the story. Women were often married off very young in imperial China, so it’s not unheard of for a girl her age to already be engaged or married. The minimum legal and socially accepted age for marriage was around 15, so try to view the story through that lens - customs were vastly different back then. 3 - Writing was mainly reserved for nobles, and paper was expensive. Writing tools were difficult to access for serving girls, which means Maomao wouldn’t have had the means to send letters home to her father. 4 - Maomao is a little goblin - she loves poisons and isn’t remotely freaked out by her tasks. In fact, she thrives on them. What others see as disturbing, she finds fascinating. 5 - The head lady-in-waiting broke the vase to expose the kidnappers. Those men had falsified documents to appear as Maomao’s “family” when they sold her to the rear palace. By doing this, the head lady actually helped Maomao. It was a common custom for poor families to sell their daughters into noble households, receiving a share of their monthly pay to survive, so the palace wouldn’t have had any reason to question the false family connection. 6 - Chocolate was considered an aphrodisiac at the time. Today, we consume so many stimulants (like chocolate and alcohol) that we’re desensitized to such effects, but back then cacao was rare and exotic — and therefore quite potent in reputation. 7 - Jinshi is the manager of the rear palace, and Gaoshun is his assistant. Together, they oversee the needs and affairs of the imperial harem. And yes they are both eunuchs (yoo·nuhks). 8 - Marrying for love was extremely rare in those times. Gyokuyou explains this clearly to Maomao, showing that she became a concubine due to politics, not romance - a reflection of the era’s societal norms. 9 - The series is not episodic. It might feel that way at first, but it’s not. Every detail, no matter how small, matters - so keep your eyes peeled!

YAAAAAASSSSS

I honestly love this show more than I thought I would, hope you guys enjoy the mystery and drama. Also a little help maomao is pronounced like “ma-ow-ma-ow” like a cat meow just with a “a” and eunuch sounds like “yoo-nik” if this helps.
