Dark Maiden Content Drop & Dynamics

No game or interface changes, just the second night of the Dark Maiden storyline. Our Dark Maiden's second night is somewhat short but will give readers a good idea of the sort of relationship she'll have with Serax and Valdricht. A reminder, Dark Maiden isn't a general audience route, don't play it unless you're itching for a submission + breeding kink romance or you just really want to immerse yourself in Wyransith. We'll collectively pretend it's the second one. I'm going to give brief descriptions for these, mostly because I've been writing all day and my fingers hurt.

Dark Maiden Dynamics

Dark Maiden | Serax Dynamic | Wild Beauty
Notification: Your dynamic ignites with struggle.

The Wild Beauty MC resists Serax at every turn—and he loves it. Her glares, her tension, her trembling restraint, it all serves as a challenge Serax can't ignore. He lives for the moments when she clings to him in surrender, her protests devolving into cries of ecstasy.

Traits: Stoic / Daring / Erudite
Tropes: enemies-to-lovers, predator & prey, 'I hate you but I want you'

Dark Maiden | Serax Dynamic | Tamed Heart
Notification: Your dynamic softens with surrender.

The Tamed Heart MC knows there's power in surrender. With her softness, she breaks Serax. With her vulnerability, she remakes him. Her obedience is not submission to fear, but an invitation for him to take what is his.

Traits: Tender / Measured / Intuitive
Tropes: protective captor, sacred surrender

Dark Maiden | Valdricht Dynamic | Veiled Mate
Notification: Your dynamic flares with heat.

The Veiled Mate guards her dignity and meets commands with quiet rebellion. To Valdricht, her antics are endearing. He doesn't mind when she asserts herself and is content to let her snap at him. Her defiance is a game that only sweetens her surrender.

Traits: Stoic / Daring / Defiant
Tropes: domination play, 'you think you're in control?'

Dark Maiden | Valdricht Dynamic | Bound Mate
Notification: Your dynamic coils with devotion.

The Bound Mate MC has no interest in resisting Valdricht. Her savoir and her sanctuary, Valdricht keeps the ghosts of her past at bay. She lies beneath him, not in fear, but in offering.

Traits: Tender / Measured / Devout
Tropes: total surrender, divine dependence, breeding claim

Dynamics as a function of narrative

As you may notice, these dynamics share similarities and distinctions with the Classic dynamics. In Dark Maiden, you can create an MC who rests on more extreme ends of the narrative. One who resents the love interests for their treatment of her, her dependence on their blood, and potentially even her role as the vessel for their children. The other who leans fully into the role of being "their woman" and mother to their children.

Unlike with the Classic dynamics, these ones will not decouple easily. I haven't yet decided if I'll even offer the option to be submissive with one and resistant with the other love interest because that dynamic will break the plot into a separate storyline. The most glaring conflict would be if you opted for a Wild Beauty/Bound Mate dynamic. I don't think Serax will survive many mornings waking Valdricht's pregnant mate with his erection. But even the reverse is dicey, because Serax becomes really protective of the Tamed Heart MC, and he won't tolerate Valdricht playing mind games with her.

So why give them separate dynamics at all? I'm not ready to rule out allowing conflicting dynamics yet. We'll see how the story progresses and what players are interested in. I may be able to do light versions of the conflicting dynamics, such as an MC who is Valdricht's Bound Mate but also has shades of the Wild Beauty dynamic with Serax. However, for roleplaying sake, assume you'll have to pick one side or the other, at least for now. We can always circle back once the main story is concluded and thread in some juicy, if short-lived, dynamic conflicts.

In Conclusion

Angry pet or willing captive princess. You choose. Both will be fun.

I'll be updating all three routes Thursday morning with the completed Night II + your second dream sequence where you'll be able to further tailor your MC's backstory. You'll start to notice subtle differences in the Dark Maiden backstory, but the Fated Mates and Classic MCs will share the same backstory options.

I won't be going too crazy with this one or FMR. FMR will split depending on how players handle Serax, but apart from that it'll be an easy write. Glad you like it! I'm so burnt out on combat queens. I don't wanna save the world, I'll my magical boyfriend handle that.

A better explanation of what I dislike is that I dislike female empowerment narratives wherein "empowerment" is being a bitch to men for literally no reason except "girls can't be tough, too." I feel like a lot of games I play (and media, in general these days) have writers who think that making women vulnerable, sensitive, or capable of making mistakes will make them regressive female characters. For me, I can't connect with any female protagonist who always says the right thing and/or always has the highest and most altruistic values. I want a character who I can relate to, with flaws I can connect with, and I want to see her not necessarily overcome those flaws but learn to be a better person, little by little. That said, in DMR Serax and Valdricht are genuine assholes and totally merit some bitchiness and therefore I have no problem writing well-deserved sass. In the case of the DMR MC, each version will have a lot of nuance. You won't have a Wild Beauty/Veiled Mate MC who's constantly angry and resentful, and I do intend to make space for the dynamics to naturally evolve as the story progresses. I think I've done a bad job of explaining my intentions for the dynamics, mostly out of fear that I'll promise too much and concern that I'll spoil story plots. I definitely do not intend for players to have an MC whose default setting is angry from start to finish. If anything, the dynamics are more like the starting points of broader character arcs. If you play a Bound Mate/Tamed Heart, she'll be very submissive, but it doesn't mean she won't learn crafty ways to assert her dominance as the story progresses. If you play Wild Beauty/Veiled Mate her arc is a power struggle and will be full of inventive ways to assert herself while she gradually does come to have feelings for her barbarian overlords. Right now, it'll be a little hard to get a read on which route you'll prefer since Night II is so short and (more importantly) the MC has a lot of confusion about where she is, who she is, and why no one can understand her. Night III will have more nuanced choices that will give players a much clearer picture of what each arc feels like.

Well, this is the mode where I will probably appreciate things moving along fairly quickly! 😆 You've said before that you dislike writing disobedient MCs and prefer to have heroines that use charm and guile to sway the male leads to her way of thinking. Will that be present in DMM or is that more for FMR and Classic? Bucking up against the menfolk here (didn't mean for that to sound like an innuendo but we all know what game we're playing so I'll leave it, lol) just seems to prompt the "Nyeh heh heh, I enjoy making you angry" response but our only alternative at present is not really reacting to condescension and contempt (I'd say something about a rock and a hard place but we'll already be between two hard places in the span of another night iirc, so we'll just have to reconcile ourselves to that oh noooooo 😜). Like, would the capacity for guile muck up the intended dynamics? Lydie can already see that showing negative emotion will just prompt the men to do it more and that protesting for something will just make them do the opposite. But if I have her experiment with different behaviors, will that confuse the game into thinking that's her actual personality? I think the capacity for an evolution in the dynamic or MC's behavior is an interesting possibility for later. I can see how frequent struggle/being on the defensive combined with the alienation and loneliness of not really being seen or considered would make even a strong person want to sob or shut down eventually (y'know, usually that part in the second or third act where the hero has lost hope and something has to happen to snap them out of it and give them the strength to carry on). I'll enjoy the increased challenge and urgency behind learning Wyransith; learning the language has always been a highlight of the game. The mode will present an unique dynamic not usually seen in IFs -- perhaps like my Deputy being locked in a small space with Joseph Seed or any one of his siblings (iykyk).

1st lemme just say, I’ve really never gotten to play such a cute submissive mc in an IF before, I feel so spoiled by this game in all three modes it’s crazy 😭 my mc is a lover not a fighter, happily swinging her legs on her perch in a gilded cage 💀 it’s entertaining to watch her adapt to the wildest circumstances and to see a fem protagonist wield her softness/vulnerability/submission in this way. I like super powerful combat queens and witty-sassy-bratty heroines in other fantasy stories too but it’s unique and endearing how our girl can navigate the world here :’) 2nd, the tone of this route is so ominous 😂 The barbarian trope has such solidarity because it’s both me and mc staring at them with tilted heads and confused eyes. You can definitely still tell DMR will be a romance but there’s a different tension 🤔 it’s like a quiet warning. It’s gonna be so funnnnn. I know it’s more work but I’m super excited you added this path <3 hopefully it stays lightweight on you as we get deeper in (potentially avoiding conflicting dynamics that might split the storyline makes sense)

Fixed it, ty <3 Don't worry, regardless of your dynamic they will argue over you, guaranteed. I haven't gone too much into depth about the various trait expressions in the dynamics, but essentially the dynamics are just guardrails to keep your character consistent. For example, tender is the bread and butter trait of Val's Bound Mate dynamic, so if you have your MC expressing the stoic trait in the dynamic, it'll be like waving a red flag for him to figure out what's wrong with her. Likewise, if you're playing Serax's Wild Beauty dynamic and your MC suddenly breaks down crying, he's not going to point and laugh at her, it'll be a very significant emotional moment because usually your MC is very even-tempered. Hope that makes sense!

First of all, delicious. Second, Val? Laughing at me after I told him to stop snapping at me? How dare. <-(Said with reluctant endearment.) Also, the AUDACITY of Serax for obviously understanding that MC called him vulgar for being shirtless and then specifically making her feed from his chest. (Also said endearingly). Both of these big-headed men are getting the defiant angry pet MC in this route lol *Error reporting!~* After the [Remain where you are.] choice, the following page choice is written in code. [p2_dm6_drink_chest] Also, understanding that you're saying it would be a later down the line thing--I would adore some of the light drama of the conflicting dynamics later on if you choose to add them. I dont hate the idea of two beautiful men arguing (for a short bit) over me lol
