CHAPTER 1

In a certain Space Colony in space...

"Wait, why are we even here anyway? Team Shadow's got this."

"You're just saying that because you want to eat chili dogs and laze under a tree, Sonic."

"Hey, man, a hedgehog can dream."

"I, for one, would love to fight whatever Eggman has planned."

"Of course you do, Knuckles. Tails, do you have visual of them at all?"

"No, which is strange. I can't even sense any signs of Chaos Energy from the Chaos Emeralds; there's something interfering with my tech!"

"Ugh, what's Eggman planning anyways? He is interrupting my Sonic time!"

"Amy, I'm not an object."

"Regardless, we need information. I'll go east, Sonic goes west, Knuckles north, Tails and Amy south. Use the comms to notify where the main action is going down."

"We could just follow either Sonic or you, Spark. The two of you seem to find trouble everywhere you go."

"Rude, I'll have you know that trouble always finds a way to me, not the other way around."

"You say that, Sonic, but you literally ran into that mess the other day. And I don't purposefully find trouble; I blame my weird luck."

"Now that I think about it, is the luck of hedgehogs cursed or something? I'll make a note to do some tests later."

"That does make some sense..."

"Right, you do that later, Tails. Now go! We'll rendezvous back once we find out what weird plan Robotnik's working on today."

Throughout a large space station hallway made of metal and bolts, a few dozen robots shaped similarly to an egg suddenly rose in activity, their rifles loaded and ready as they aimed forwards at the gate of the hallway, waiting for any signs of activity.

Seconds go by before they started to open fire, blasting lasers towards an invisible target. Moments after the robots shot their rifles, a brown blur appeared, zooming at incredible speeds as the lasers could barely reach their intended target.

Zigzagging around the hallway, the blur soon retaliated, seemingly defying gravity as it traversed around the hallway in a 3-dimensional plane, hopping past barriers and latching onto vertical walls to appear in front of every robot before dismantling it with unexpected powerful force.

It threw itself into them as it bashed its way through with precise strikes as the impact force shattered the robots into fragments of circuit boards and exposed wires.

In what seemed to be seconds after the start of the chaos, the last robot in the vicinity eventually broke down into pieces as the blur halted its momentum upon the lack of enemies left, skidding to slow itself down.

"Thirty-eight, the population of Badniks seems to get more dense near this direction. Robotnik must be nearby."

The brown blur spoke as the dust settled, revealing a Mobian hedgehog wearing black fingerless gloves with white strands of fur along a pair of black boots.

Slicking his brown bangs of fur to clear his vision, he breathed out before fishing into the back of his quills to grab his phone.

"Inner east—more activity—probable location of Robotnik... Sent. They should be here in a minute or two."

Muttering to himself, he shoved his phone back into his quills before running, his speed increasing at every step of the way as he soon became a blur once more due to his extreme speeds.

Racing through the hallway, he mentally noted that the amount of enemies drastically dropped to 0 as he cleared the rooms connected to the hallways as a safety precaution.

Suddenly feeling a sensation in his quills, he skidded to a halt before grabbing his phone to check its message.

"Sonic fighting—Northwest from center—Team Shadow captive?!"

His eyes widened in shock before he darted towards the location in a zip, a streak of amber Chaos Energy trailing behind him as he pushed himself to reach his friends as soon as he could.

Reaching a large room filled with machinery, he ignored the fight that was going on between the rest of Team Sonic and Robotnik, opting to search for the captive members of the darker version of their team.

A few seconds of searching later, he found Shadow and Rouge suspended in the air, evidently lethargic from their expressions, while the robot Omega was laid on the ground in an inactive state.

His arms sparked amber, filled with Chaos Energy, before he disappeared, reappearing a moment after sparks of electricity surged from the devices that held the members of Team Shadow hostage, letting gravity take back control.

Catching the two Mobians, Spark gently set them down and did a quick check on them before breathing a sigh of relief, his attention shifting back to Omega—an arm held his wrist as he was just about to check on his robot friend, grabbing his attention.

"Shadow! Are you good?"

"Chaos Emeralds—Robotnik has all of them."

Shadow warned with a grim voice as Spark's eyes narrowed in confusion.

"But how? I remember we kept one back at HQ."

"He has developed something new, a new breed of Badniks. Caught us by surprise; they're immune to my Chaos Control."

"Say WHAT?!"

This time he was truly shocked. How the hell did Robotnik come up with a way to counter their most powerful moves? A sudden explosion rang out, drawing their attention before Shadow grunted, standing up before carrying his teammates from the ground.

"We'll join the fight soon—Go!"

"Right—but first... Rings!"

Searching in his quills, Spark tossed the ultimate lifeform a sack, Shadow catching them with ease as he opened it, revealing golden rings held together by a looped thread, before dashing towards the action, leaving Team Shadow to recuperate using the Rings.

"Come on, Eggman, Egg-Hammers and Gunners? That's getting rather classic!"

"Damn you, Sonic! Fire! Fire all weapons!"

A flurry of lasers and missiles shot towards the group of Mobians as they scattered, each of them moving to dodge the projectiles. Amy ducked as she used her large Piko Piko Hammer to deflect the missiles that headed her way as she stared at Sonic with a deadpan look.

"You just had to anger the Doctor, didn't you?"

The person in question simply shrugged before sidestepping a laser beam that intended to pierce his skull.

"It'll be boring if I don't. But then again, Eggman looks a bit distracted today."

"Incoming!"

A group of blue, pink, and yellow blurs separated as a large steel hammer slammed on the ground, missing the Mobians by a mile away. While the three were taking their time, however, a red blur was doing work, bashing into every Badnik in the area that it could see.

Uncurling from a Spin Dash, Knuckles brandished his spiked knuckles before slamming his arm forward as an Egg-Hammer came close to his vicinity, intending to turn the Echidna into paste.

With superhuman strength, the small Echidna somehow matched the strength of the large Egg-Hammer, a shockwave erupting from the impact when Knuckles pushed, overpowering the Badnik as he shoved the hammer out of the way and leaped into the air.

Crying out a battle cry, Knuckles Spin Dashed towards the robot's head before punching it with his might, piercing through the steel like butter as he exited from the other side of the large Egg-Hammer.

The team exploded into action, with Sonic speeding through his enemies, slamming into them with his own high-speed Spin Dashes.

Tails, on the other hand, was crouched in a corner with his equipment in hand, typing away as his backpack automatically fired lasers at Badniks that came close to him.

Amy was next to Tails, protecting their youngest member by swinging her largely comical hammer to destroy any robots that came their way while Tails was vigorously typing away.

A few seconds later, a brown blur joined the battle, Spin Dashing into the Egg-Mobile that Robotnik piloted, causing the doctor to almost slip out from his hovercraft.

"You—!"

"Afternoon, Robotnik! Have you been working out? You're looking larger than usual!"

Cheekily, Spark landed on the ground with a smirk before amber lightning danced around his body, his eyes lighting up gold before he crossed his arms, his feet leaving the ground.

Panicking at the sudden beeping from his hovercraft, Robotnik hit a large button on his console as a glass case appeared and covered the Egg-Mobile's exposed areas.

"SPARKING BURST!"

From within his body, a burst of electricity sparked outwards like an explosion, unleashing a surge of lightning around him in a sphere-shaped barrier that disintegrated every Badnik that came in contact with the explosion.

Landing back on the ground, Spark couldn't help but grin at the sweating Robotnik, Egg-Mobile's hover technology visibly damaged as one of the boosters on the Doctor's machine gave out.

"Regret giving me so much Chaos Energy now, Doctor?"

"Spark The Hedgehog... You were supposed to be my masterpiece, and yet you resist against me! Your creator!"

Robotnik yelled, slamming his arms on his console in frustration. Snorting, Spark crossed his arms on his chest, ducking a stray laser beam that was fired from an Egg-Blaster.

"Please, you were going to rewrite my whole existence after I failed to defeat Sonic and the gang. Besides, any intelligent life form would have betrayed a crazy megalomaniac like yourself."

Gritting his teeth, Robotnik ran his fingers on the console of his Egg-Mobile.

"Why you... I'll make sure to savor your defeat, Spark! Metal Sonic, return back to base and destroy these fools!"

Finishing his sentence with a press of his console, a large portal suddenly manifested behind the Egg-Mobile before a dense pressure descended onto the spacecraft. The air turned cold as a chill shot down his spine. The world seemed to stop for a moment; a metal leg stepped out from the portal, and eventually, Metal Sonic emerged from within.

A snark soon disappeared from his mouth as Spark looked at his "sibling" with closer detail. It looked much different the last time he saw it during the Project: Shadow fiasco a while back.

It looked the same shape-wise, its appearance resembling Sonic more than him, with metal body parts that replicated Sonic's fit and a display for his ruby red eyes.

But this time, the usual metallic blue shade similar to Sonic was gone, replacing it with a matte black finish with exposed gold wiring and joints. Not only that, the circular depression on its chest was now painted red, with the boosters on its back being twice as large.

The big difference, however, was the new additions to its design. The forearms of Metal were thicker, his legs and boots were larger, and even his head and torso expanded.

It was like... Metal was now imitating an edgy Overlander?

"What the—?"

He could barely hear Sonic questioning the new look of Metal when the world suddenly shifted before pain erupted from the back of his head, inertia reclaiming its hold as his body slammed into the walls of the colony.

The sharp pain quickly subsided as he groggily opened his eyes, watching the chaos unfold in front of him as Metal did quick work on his allies, moving as fast as Sonic as it easily defeated Team Sonic except for its unofficial team leader.

Getting up with a limp, he mustered the energy to fish out a sack from his quills, digging into the sack to search for its only contents.

From his hand, a dozen Rings glowed briefly as a warm feeling blessed him, making the pain on the back of his head fade into motes of light.

With a new wind of energy, he burst into action, tossing the sack of Rings to Knuckles, who was still conscious, before grabbing Sonic just as Metal fired black bolts of lasers towards them.

"Dude, since when did Metal have guns?!"

"I don't know, but we have to knock it out before handling Robotnik! Here!"

Tossing him the remaining Rings that he could spare, the two hedgehogs got into position as the black and gold robot charged towards them with extreme speeds.

"SPARKING HURRICANE!"

A large gust of wind pushed Metal off-balance as Sonic came into the fray, slamming the robot into the ground with a well-placed Spin Dash that sent the robot down into the lower levels.

Spark, however, was breathing heavily with sweat pouring from his face, his hand crushing the final Ring in his possession to restore back some of his energy.

"I'm almost out of juice; go destroy whatever Robotnik's doing; I'll take over!"

"You sure? I can—"

"Just go; I can sense—"

The closed door that sealed Team Sonic after Metal's appearance bursts open as a black and red figure blinked into existence, pummeling the Badniks that were firing on the remainder of the resistance.

Seeing Shadow, Sonic nodded without hesitation before disappearing into the wind, chasing after Robotnik, who flew away once his weapon bought the time he needed to escape.

Regaining his breath, Spark curled into a ball of spikes before Spin Dashing over to Shadow, who had just finished destroying an Egg-Bomber with its own explosive.

"Where are the other two?"

"Giving chase to Robotnik. Have you already handled—"

"Guys! Robotnik's powering up something HUGE! We have approximately a few more minutes before whatever he has made goes off!"

Tails screamed out as he rapidly typed on his Miles Electric, showing to Amy and Knuckles the blueprints of something the size of a miniature Space Colony Ark. Shadow's frown narrowed as he questioned the Mobian fox.

"What does it do?"

"I—I don't know! I've never seen this kind of tech before! I'm even thinking that this isn't Eggman's designs!"

"Damn! Then who made it?"

Knuckles looked over Tails' shoulder to glance at the Miles Electric as Amy swung her hammer to decapitate an Egg-Pawn from getting close to her friends.

BOOOOOOOOM!

The floor underneath them shook as Metal reappeared, floating with the boosters on his back before landing with a loud thud.

"Tails, how bad is it?"

"This resembles jump drive technology, and if I'm interpreting this right, Eggman's planning to... jump through space? Wait, this can't be right. The calculations are all over the place, and it’s not designed for standard spatial translocation—Oh."

The Mobian fox's eyes widened as the full implications hit him. Without hesitation, he activated his communicator as he yelled through the comms.

"Sonic, listen carefully! Eggman is attempting to move the Ark across dimensions! You need to stop him before it's too late—"

Before Tails could finish, goosebumps grew on Spark's arms as his head shot towards the direction where Eggman escaped.

Then, a blinding white light erupted, swallowing everything in its path as a deafening explosion roared, a shockwave slamming into the group with unrelenting force.

He could hear his friends cry out as his views shift from white to black—

And then...

The world shattered.
