Chapter 7 | Upper Level Glimpse

Leon forced himself away from the café, unclenching his fingers from the package.

His wrist display flashed a warning, fifteen minutes remaining for four deliveries. Not even enough time for self-pity.

The debt is more important now, Leon thought.

He accelerated his pace through the mid-level residential corridors, legs burning as he half-jogged between destinations.

The pressure in his chest had nothing to do with the exertion, but he pushed the feeling down, retreating to the coping routines that had kept him functioning since his parents abandoned him when he was fourteen.

Three deliveries later, sweat beaded on his forehead despite the perfectly regulated mid-level air. His mind continued to work even as his emotions threatened to unravel.

Seven minutes left, one package remaining. He examined it with growing unease.

A yellow warning light pulsed along the package's edge.

Restricted Access Zone

A system notification appeared on his wrist display.

Elevated verification required for delivery to Crystalline Heights, Unit 1428.

Leon stifled a groan.

Crystalline Heights. The luxury apartment complex marking the absolute boundary between Mid-Level and the true Fulgari realm.

As close to Upper Virellion as someone like him could legally step without special clearance.

His fingers worked the route calculation. Seven minutes to reach the destination, complete verification, and exit mid-level territory before his access expired.

Just enough time if everything went perfectly.

Leon broke into a steady jog, moving against the flow of pedestrian traffic toward the wealthier sectors. With each block, the architecture around him further transformed. Hard concrete angles softening into elegant curves, sterile hallways giving way to open spaces with gardens. The ambient lighting sensed his movement, creating subtle golden trails that followed him like reluctant companions.

In lower levels, climate control meant sporadic blasts from rattling vents that alternated between freezing and suffocating. Here, the temperature remained perfect without any visible mechanism. No units, just silent technology embedded within the very structure of the buildings.

Crystalline Heights rose before him. The complex's spires caught the artificial light at impossible angles, breaking it into prismatic patterns that shifted with the viewer's movement.

The main entrance featured a transparent security field that pulsed with subtle blue energy. A barrier that separated the comfortable from the privileged.

Leon watched as two Fulgari residents approached the main entrance. Their nanite augmentations identified them automatically, the security field parting before they reached it. They glided through without breaking stride, their movements graced with the unnatural fluidity that marked those fully integrated with mana technology.

He circled around to the service entrance where a bored security attendant glanced at his temporary access display.

"Cutting it close, courier," The guard pointed to his timer. "Seven minutes remaining."

Leon nodded, presenting his credentials and the package's verification code.

The security field hesitated before admitting him; scanning his entire body and courier uniform three times. A subtle warning tone sounded as he finally passed through, causing nearby residents to glance in his direction.

Their expressions ranged from outright distaste to complete disinterest as if his presence was simultaneously offensive and beneath notice.

Inside, the building itself seemed to reject him. The ambient illumination dimmed around him immediately, doing its best to render him invisible to the wealthy inhabitants. The floor beneath his feet absorbed his footsteps while simultaneously amplifying the graceful cadence of a Fulgari woman passing by. She walked with the fluid grace of someone attuned to mana right after birth, her steps creating soft musical tones in the floor panels.

Leon followed the directional indicators to Unit 1428, hyper-conscious of the timer counting down on his wrist display.

Five minutes remaining.

At the unit's entrance, he pressed the notification panel. The smooth surface rippled beneath his touch, acknowledging his presence while announcing it to the occupant.

Nothing happened.

Leon glanced at his timer.

Four minutes remaining.

He pressed the panel again.

Just as panic began to rise in his throat, the door slid open with silent precision.

Three minutes.

A tall Fulgari man stood before him, hands weaving intricate patterns in the air that left blue trails of mana. His eyes were focused on something Leon couldn't see. Neural interface projections visible only to those with cerebral implants.

"Package delivery for Emris Valar," Leon announced.

The man continued his air gestures without acknowledging Leon's presence.

Leon stood awkwardly, holding the package forward. He cleared his throat.

"Sir? I need verification for delivery."

The man's eyes flicked toward him for a fraction of a second, then returned to his invisible work.

"One moment," he muttered, still manipulating invisible data.

Leon activated his outdated courier scanner. The device gave a pathetic beep, struggling to connect with the high-security verification protocols of a restricted access package. The scanner's screen displayed a blinking error message:

Compatible verification interface not detected

The man sighed with exaggerated frustration and lowered his hands.

"Section 5, Paragraph 3 of Imperial Delivery Protocol states that Fulgari recipients may override standard verification," he recited, each word dripping with condescension.

His fingers glowed with concentrated mana as he reached toward Leon's scanner, bypassing the outdated technology with a casual gesture. The verification screen immediately changed, displaying authorization protocols Leon had never seen before. The gulf between their technologies—their worlds—demonstrated without a single word of explanation.

Two minutes remaining.

While the customer manipulated the verification sequence, Leon's attention drifted to the floor-to-ceiling windows dominating the apartment's far wall. They offered a breathtaking view of Virellion's upper levels—floating platforms connected by transparent walkways, crystal towers breaking light into perfect rainbows. In the distance, Fulgari citizens moved with inhuman grace.

Another world.

The thought settled in Leon's chest.

Might as well be looking at another planet.

The delivery scanner emitted a harsh beep, jolting Leon back to his present reality. The verification had completed, but the customer had already turned away, his attention returning to his neural interface.

"Delivery accepted," he stated, the words directed at the air rather than at Leon.

Leon stood forgotten in the luxurious apartment, a ghost in a world of light and privilege. The floor beneath him gave a subtle vibration. A reminder that his presence was temporary and unwelcome.

One minute remaining.

He backed out of the apartment, the door sliding shut before he fully cleared the threshold. His heart hammered as he sprinted toward the exit, following the subtle floor indicators that seemed eager to guide him out.

At the security barrier, Leon watched a group of Fulgari residents move through in perfect synchronization, their augmentations allowing them to pass right through security fields that would reject him with painful force. The building's systems tracked their movements with attentive care, adjusting lighting and temperature to their preferences as they passed.

For him, the lights dimmed further, hurrying him toward the exit as his access timer counted down.

Thirty seconds remaining.

The exit barrier pulsed an angry red as he approached, sensing his expiring credentials. Leon broke into a full sprint, diving through just as the security field began to view him as a threat. He felt the energy crackle against his skin. Not painful, but a warning of what would happen if he had been seconds late.

Outside again, Leon leaned against a maintenance wall, catching his breath. His wrist display flashed confirmation that his courier shift had been completed successfully, his meager payment processed.

The difference between sectors felt even more stark now, the transition more jarring. He glimpsed a world where even the buildings responded to their inhabitants with a kind of reverence, where technology and mana integrated seamlessly into everyday existence.

A world where people like Vanessa might be welcomed as visitors but never truly belonged.

A world where people like him weren't even supposed to be seen.

No wonder she left.

Leon pushed himself away from the wall, joining the flow of service workers heading back toward the transit station. His body moved automatically while his mind remained in that apartment, staring out at a floating city he could see but never reach.
