Chapter 1 | Encounter

The Orbital Carrier loomed in silence as it neared Astralis, its shadow dragging across the curve of the planet. Leon stood alone, watching the lush green planet fill the reinforced glass, his fingers absently tracing the Imperial insignia etched into his chest plate.

The black armor with its gold accents felt strange against his skin, a constant reminder of how far he had come from the cramped apartment in the Lower Levels.

A year ago, he had been calculating how to avoid being sent to Foundation Level. Now he commanded a cavora of The Imperial Covenant's elite forces.

His neural interface pulsed against his temple. The subtle ache, a reminder of the cerebral resonance implant that had changed everything.

The technicians had been wrong about him. About everything.

The memory of that first assessment still tasted bitter.

D-rank compatibility. Standard infantry track. Words meant to define his entire existence.

Yet here he stood.

A terminal beside him flashed with a deployment notification.

Ten minutes to atmospheric entry.

Time to become what his soldiers needed; not Leon Ezra who once worried about making debt payments, but Blade Captain Ezra, the Nullari who survived what should have killed him and rose through ranks that should have been closed to him.

Leon straightened, shoulders squaring as he made the expression his troops would expect; confident, focused, and untroubled by doubt. The face of a leader they would follow regardless of what lay ahead of them.

The deployment bay hummed with pre-mission activity as he entered. One hundred elite soldiers of the Obsidian Order moved with efficiency, checking harnesses, weapons, and equipment.

The black armor with gold trim marked them as specialized, mana-enhanced operators tasked with the Imperial Army's most complex missions.

“Think this is overkill?” came a question from a broad-shouldered soldier adjusting the mana resonance in his shield. “Sending two cavoras of the Order for a rescue mission seems excessive.”

“Better to get it over with quickly,” replied another, securing a Nullari rifle to her back. Unlike most of their cavora, she favored mixing unaugmented weaponry with her enhanced MRM sword. “After that shitshow on Keldris, I’ll take a rescue mission.”

A tall soldier beside her clicked his tongue in disapproval.

“Why even bother with that?” He gestured toward the rifle with disdain. “Might as well bring a slingshot against what we’re facing.”

She finished the weapon check. “Might be fun trying to find weak spots against mana beasts. Not everything needs a glowing blade through the skull.”

Leon approached, the conversation falling silent as they registered his presence.

“Final equipment checks. We hit the ground in seven minutes.” His voice carried the quiet authority he cultivated, not the forced command of someone unworthy of power, but the calm certainty of someone who earned it.

“Yes, Captain!” they responded in unison, movements sharpening, focus locking in.

The carrier began its descent through Astralis’ dense cloud layer, shuddering against atmospheric turbulence. A low hum filled the bay as armor magnetized to the walls, harnesses locking into place with mechanical clicks. Straps secured tight across chests, holding each soldier ready for the drop.

Leon watched his troops, some veterans, others newer transfers who had yet to see much combat. If any of them felt fear, it did not show.

Two carriers touched down in a forest clearing, setting down gracefully despite the uneven terrain. Leon’s helmet interface flickered with incoming mission orders, delivered directly from command.

Alpha Cavora—secure mining colony and extract survivors.

Beta Cavora—maintain perimeter defense and secure carriers.

"Standard formation. Vora Three take point,” his voice carrying through their linked communication system.

The forest closed around them seconds after leaving the clearing, dense vegetation with leaves the size of dinner plates. Bioluminescent fungi coated tree trunks, casting eerie blue light across the forest floor. The humidity was oppressive, even through environmental controls.

The attack came without warning.

A massive creature erupted from the foliage ahead. Twelve feet of scaled muscle with multiple rows of teeth and six clawed limbs. A mana beast with its hide glowing with mana that pulsed in bright blue and orange patterns across its body.

A rifle cracked, the shot hitting the creature between its four eyes. The projectile bounced off its hide.

"Defensive formation," Leon commanded, his voice calm under pressure. "Shield bearers forward, spears to flanking positions."

Ten soldiers moved with perfect coordination, those with mana-reinforced shields forming a front wall while others circled with spears ready. They'd faced similar threats a dozen times before, this was routine.

The beast charged, colliding with the shield wall. The soldiers held, their enhanced strength matching the creature's raw power. Spears struck from both sides, Mana-Resonant Material tips penetrating the beast's hide where the unaugmented rifle couldn't.

It thrashed twice, then collapsed.

"Good," Leon noted, already signaling them forward. "Leave two to confirm termination and retrieve mana core. We continue to the colony."

Distant explosions caused them to accelerate their pace, the ground trembling beneath their feet. They moved faster, formation tightening as they navigated through increasingly dense vegetation.

Another attack caught them unprepared.

One moment the trees stood empty; the next, humanoid figures materialized among the foliage. They wore flexible armor of brown that seemed to shift colors with each movement, blending perfectly with the forest. Their faces remained hidden behind smooth helmets.

"Ambush!" Leon signaled his troops to close ranks.

The humanoids raised their arms in synchronized movements, speaking in a language that sounded rhythmic and smooth like water over stones. The very air around them shifted, ambient mana currents changing directions, flowing toward their outstretched hands.

"What the hell?" muttered a soldier, shield raised. "They're redirecting the mana field. That's not—"

Leon watched in stunned silence as the mana changed color, from natural blue to vibrant red, before condensing into concentrated spheres hovering above the humanoids' palms.

"Brace!" Leon shouted, but the warning came too late.

The first attack struck like liquid fire, burning through two soldiers instantly, their enhanced armor offering no protection. Their screams cut short as the flame-like energy reduced them to ash in seconds.

Before anyone could react, a second attack manifested. Blade-like currents of wind that sliced through the air with extreme precision. A third soldier fell, cut in half despite his mana-enhanced protection.

"Advance!" Leon shouted, charging toward the nearest attacker. His MRM forged sword connected with the humanoid's midsection, blood splattering across the forest floor.

Leon spun, snatching a spear from a fallen soldier and hurling it through another attacker with deadly accuracy.

Around him, his cavora recovered from the initial shock, adapting to the unfamiliar threat. Rifle rounds found targets in the trees, the projectiles proving effective against these enemies before they could activate their strange mana manipulation.

"They're using pure mana like a weapon," shouted the tall soldier, his blade slicing through an attacker's arm. "This isn't in any combat doctrine!"

The surviving humanoids began generating what appeared to be pure mana shields. Translucent barriers that glowed with internal energy. Rifle rounds bounced off them.

"Push toward the colony," Leon ordered, signaling a forward advance through sustained enemy fire. "Shield bearers cover the flanks!"

They moved as one cohesive unit, but the strange mana attacks continued to find vulnerabilities in their defenses. More soldiers fell. Burned by flame-like energy, sliced by wind, crushed by earth that rose and hardened like steel.

The mining colony came into view as a collection of reinforced structures now partially destroyed. Bodies littered the ground; the distinctive uniforms of Imperial miners and guards visible among the debris. Most showed signs of the same attacks that had decimated Leon's forces.

"Secure that shelter," Leon pointed toward the largest intact structure where life signs registered on his neural interface. "Vora One with me. The rest establish perimeter defense."

Inside the shelter, they found survivors. Twelve of them, all wearing the insignia of colony leadership. All Fulgari.

"They came without warning," one woman explained, her enhanced eyes flickering with fear despite her augmentations.

"What are they?" Leon asked, kneeling beside an injured survivor.

"We don't know. They look human, but…" The colony leader trailed off, gesturing helplessly. "They don’t speak Imperial, and the way they use mana…I’ve never seen anything like it."

Leon moved to examine one of the dead attackers that his soldiers had dragged inside for study. He removed the helmet revealing features that were startlingly human but with one striking exception.

Long pointed ears extended at least three inches beyond what would be normal for any Imperial citizen.

"Human, but not human," the woman with the rifle commented, studying the corpse. "And they control mana without implants or nanites."

Leon's helmet interface flared with notifications as more explosions rocked the colony perimeter.

His remaining forces were engaging a second wave of attackers.

"How many of these beings have you seen?" he asked the colony leader.

"Dozens at first. Then hundreds." The woman's voice trembled. "They appeared right after we sent word about the MRM discovery."

Leon activated his command channel.

"Command, requesting immediate extraction and reinforcement. We're facing an unknown hostile force with capabilities beyond standard parameters."

The response came through with minor static interference:

"—What's their rela— to ambient mana, Cap— Ezra?"

The question struck Leon as odd given their situation.

"They're manipulating it directly, sir. Changing its properties, using it as a weapon without technology."

A long pause followed before the voice returned, tension evident even through the distortion.

"Get yo—ople out now, Captain. That's —ect order. We need what you've found."

As another explosion rocked the building, Leon realized the implications.

Whatever these beings were, The Imperial Covenant had either encountered them before—or feared them enough to prioritize information over the mining operation.

"Prepare for immediate evacuation," he ordered. "We're taking one of the bodies back for analysis."

The survivors looked at him with confusion and fear.

"What about the colony?" One asked. "The MRM deposits?"

"Those are no longer the mission," Leon signaled his remaining forces to prepare for retreat. "It’s now to survive."
