When I see how often attempts to advertise took all the wrong lessons AND failed to read the room, I wonder if the problem is professional marketers have no talent or everyone thinks that and does it themselves.

2025-06-27 18:26:44 +0000 UTCThere's a LOT of cargo culting that goes on in the video game sphere, and marketing is probably the worst of it. I'm reminded of how many action games rip off Borderlands in having bombastic colourful intros for characters who then proceed to spend the game standing around in one spot giving quests; damn right, you can't possibly ask people to care about a character before giving them any reason to. I do wonder if marketing department pod people see the reactions to character reveals in games like Marvel Rivals (or vs. Capcom), Smash Bros and Mortal Kombat and such, and in their way completely miss the point that the only reason people care about these characters is because they have existing context and familiarity and their appearance alone is notable.
