How Prey Saved the Predator Franchise | The Backdrop

Comments

I absolutely loathed The Predator, for every reason you covered, but also because their attempt at complex lore was insultingly stupid.

I think that's also true of "Predator", and the shorts in "Killer of Killers."

"Killer of Killers?" I have no official confirmation. But my gut feeling is that it was commissioned to replace "Badlands." "Badlands" was meant to be straight to streaming, but got upgraded to theatrical - supposedly for the same reason "Romulus" did, that streaming was in decline and that "Prey" had popped. I suspect that left a gap on the streaming slate, which is already very thin, and so this (undoubtedly) cheaper animated movie was a compromise. To be clear, I also think it's very good, and am glad to see it in any form.

I really wonder why this movie is restricted to streaming, especially when Disney supposedly argued with the director that streaming would be dead. Reminds me of how first party games were mostly console exclusive, which at some point no longer caused more people to buy a specific console for those exclusive games. Just look at all those pc ports of former console exclusive titles. As if all those streaming providers didn't learned from the decline of cable tv. I wonder if this is a legal restriction or just a shortsighted business decision.

One of the things I like about Prey is that you could cut out the predator and still have a movie, but one that probably wouldn’t have been as widely seen regardless of how good it was. The predator is like wrapping a pill in bacon so you can feed it to your dog.

Great encapsulation of what makes Prey such a good sequel and what makes any sequel good.

I just wish Disney put this somewhere other than Hulu so I could see it.

That Dewey pun makes me want to scream. Ugh the latest MI had so much of this shit, taking giving Office Drone who Gets Diarrhea his own 20-minute plot arc with 500 heroic moments.

William Alexander

Such a fantastic film, gave me a little hope that we'd one day get an alien vs predator film faithful to the comics, cause Naru could easily become akin to the character Machiko from those comics.
