Oh, It's Another Roguelike | Semi-Ramblomatic

Comments

Roguelikes have their appeal from a developer's perspective as stated, but one of the big potential pitfalls with the formula is that you're ceding a lot of control over the pacing and moment to moment design compared to a linear game. The whole rogue'lite' deal of meta-progression and gradual empowerment is meant to provide more of a sense of progress and accomplishment, and the changes in general are basically trying to claw back some of that control from the RNG. Finding the balance is very hard.

That's definitely an issue I've run into with roguelites; the early stages become a tedious chore that no longer has any surprise or challenge while the later ones where the difficulty spikes up and you have very little opportunity to learn or experiment. Hades oddly enough I feel has some efforts to mitigate this, unlocking new enemies and events in early stages as the story progresses.

Insightful and entertaining as always. I love these videos.

In my heart of hearts, I will always believe that it's not a roguelike unless it follows the Berlin Interpretation (i.e. grid-based, turn-based combat, randomised levels and items, and nothing held over between playthroughs other than the high score table.) An inevitable result of far too many hours playing Moria and Angband in my youth. Although I recognise I'm very much in the minority these days... a roguelike should be LIKE ROGUE.

Food for thought❤

I want to like roguelikes/roguelites but I always lose interest incredibly quickly because I hit a roadblock and can never progress past a certain point. I lost interest in playing Hades when I started dying in Elysium thanks to the enemy gimmick and the boss fight. Roboquest is also really fun but the third area is able to kill me quite consistently due to all the crowd control and the damage scaling. Build guides can only take me so far because roguelites punish mistakes a lot harder the farther in the run you get. Damage scales incredibly high and taking just a few hits means I die. Which sends me back all the way to the beginning to go through the levels that don't pose any real challenge anymore. It gets boring needing to do those parts just to get to the bit that I need to improve on. So I just end up quitting before I finish the game
