[Write-in Thread] Firelink Episode #54

This week on FIrelink we'll be discussing today's PlayStation State of Play, the recent big report on Warner Bros. Games division and what we've been up to this week!

Send in your thoughts, questions, or topics you'd be interested in us discussing! We won't have time to read and discuss everything, and please keep posts topical, safe for work and not huge walls of text.

Submissions close at 5 PM CT on Wednesday, February 12th.

Note: Apologies for the lateness on this one, Marty was out sick this week and we didn't know if we would have an episode tonight.

Reflections on how many more AAA Eastern games we're getting now? Stellar Blade, Lies of P, Black Myth Wukong, and now several games at the State of Play? It's nice to see more high-profile (non-JRPG) games announced.

Freakjob

Do you think Insta culture, take in one thing for a short time then move on, is a thing in gaming? No one thing seems to hang around for long. Or are we just spoiled with too much good stuff?!

@Ryallen had a good question on last week's write-in about what the ripple effects of AAA commercial failure on the game marketplace as a whole, especially for AA and indie developers. They brought up both the potential to make investors more skittish and the impact on storefront ecosystems like Steam, Epic, Playstation & Xbox, which can't sustain themselves solely on smaller titles. What might be some consequences of a wider "market correction" on the industry?

That's cause this is for the podcast. We're not co-streaming the actual state of play today.

Hey, the State of Play starts in 15 mintues. Your live of it says 2 more hours.

Square Enix recently came out and said that DQ3HD sold more than expected, but in the past most of their turn based RPGs end up selling more than they expected. Do you think SQEX is averse to selling smaller scale turn based RPGs like they used to? If so, why and if not, why do they constantly underestimate their turn based fare? I'm of the opinion that SQEX never got over the shit thrown at JRPGs during the seventh generation of consoles, in part due to XPlay openly mocking JRPGs, and they've been insecure about the genre ever since Also get well soon Marty

Ryallen

What did you expect to happen at PlayStation's State of Play this evening? And what did you get?

I assume you're talking about the "Warner Bros. Games suffered $300 million in losses last year" report? If so, beyond the quality of the business decisions they made... * Big games are multi-year investments, and they make their big bucks in the initial offering. So a "loss this year"--is it really "this year"? * Even if a game is live-service, they are still supposed to make a big chunk at the beginning. Has any game turned itself around from a bad live service launch?

Thoughts on FromSoft selling DLC before it’s even being released (In regards to Nightreign Deluxe Edition)? Seems like an uncharacteristic move for them.

I swear, if Marty gets under the weather again, I'll make the most unholiest soup ever known to JM8 and it'll be a fucking miracle cure.

Not to be reductive but Warner Brothers game division has an uncertain future is a "Of course they are" moment to say that Warner Brothers is mismanaged is analogous to saying water is wet. With the exception of the Arkham trilogy it's difficult to point to a success they've had in the last 15 years that would inspire confidence in gamers let alone out of touch shareholders

Hey all, looking at the topics, this may not be for today's episode, but here goes: Ongoing talk shows work partly because of the chemistry, some form of familiar give-and-take, between the hosts. How did yours form? How much of it is automatic through time, and how much of it is you doing something about it? Are you happy about where it is? Do you think there's more experimentation in the future?

Baris P.

Do you play or watch some specific comfort food media when feeling sick? Or just the usual stuff/nothing at all? (Topical in a broader sense, but I'm curious.)

JR

Hope Marty feels better soon! Do any of you guys have games or types of games that you like to play when you're sick?

Nidarom

Get better soon to Marty.
